Job Summary

 

 

 

Conduct research under the supervision of Prof. David J. Gorin within the framework of the NSF grant “CAREER: DNA-Catalyst Conjugates for Site-Selective Transformations in Biological Contexts," which provides stipend, fringe benefits, and professional development funds for this position.

Essential Functions

 

 

 

Laboratory research (75%)

 

 

 

The goal of the proposed research is to develop DNA-based reagents as analogs of enzymes for the selective chemical modification of one target molecule in a complex biological mixture (for recent progress, see: DOI 10.1039/C7SC04554A). Specific experimental goals include the synthesis of hybrid molecules containing DNA and small molecule catalyst domains and the development of fluorogenic assays for chemical reactions of interest.

 

 

 

Laboratory administration (10%) & Undergraduate mentoring (15%)

 

 

 

Other responsibilities include participation in weekly lab meetings, ordering laboratory supplies as needed, and mentoring of undergraduate researchers in the laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, education, experience, certifications, licenses)

 

 

 

Bachelors degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related field.  Research experience in synthetic organic chemistry, chemical biology, or biochemistry.

 

 

 

Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

 

 

 

Skills 

 

 

 

Qualified applications will have: experience working with biomolecules (nucleic acids or proteins) or in multistep organic synthesis, familiarity with NMR for small molecule analysis, HPLC, ESI-MS, DNA-linked chemical libraries, and/or fluorescence assays, ability to mentor undergraduate researchers, communicate scientific ideas and data in written and oral formats,  organizational and time management skills.
