Job Details

Visiting Professor of Chemistry

The Amherst College Department of Chemistry invites applications for a full-time three-semester visiting appointment in chemistry (rank open) beginning in January 2022. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly diversified its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, and nationality. Today, 57 percent of the students receive financial aid; 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color; and 10 percent of our students are international students. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring this extraordinarily talented group of students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.

The position requires a Ph.D. in chemistry and the successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of general chemistry at the undergraduate level, and fully engage with ongoing departmental efforts in developing new methods of inclusive pedagogy. Considered a collaborative departmental responsibility, the general chemistry courses at Amherst are often team-taught and share a common laboratory curriculum.  Although there is no expectation for independent research, opportunities for engagement with existing, ongoing research programs in the department are available. Applicants with expertise in any sub-discipline of chemistry are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should submit electronically to https://apply.interfolio.com/90778 a cover letter; a curriculum vitae; a statement of teaching philosophy, including philosophy of teaching a diverse student body; and the contact information for three confidential references. Review of applications will begin September 1, 2021, and will continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to Professor Mark D. Marshall, co-chair of the Department of Chemistry, at mdmarshall@amherst.edu. Please also consult the departmental website at https://www.amherst.edu/academiclife/departments/chemistry.

Located in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts, Amherst participates with Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and with the University of Massachusetts in the Five College Consortium.

Amherst College is an equal opportunity employer and encourages persons of all genders, persons of color, and persons with disabilities to apply. The college is committed to enriching its educational experience and its culture through the diversity of its faculty, administration, and staff.
