Job Details

  • Maintaining and enhancing the creativity and productivity of HPFRU by determining program direction, developing and establishing project teams.
  • Hiring personnel and managing the human, fiscal, and physical resources assigned to HPFRU.
  • Conducting, advising and collaborating with scientists from Universities, commodity organizations, professional associations, regulatory agencies and industry concerning all research within the Unit.
  • Ensuring the proper interpretation and reporting of scientific research results and information.
  • Conducting and directing research that integrates food science, engineer, chemistry, nutrition and microbiological approaches to enhance the purity, healthfulness and marketability of foods.
  • Actively engaging stakeholders in support of unit research programs with the goal of transferring developed technologies into commercialization.
  • Leading research defining, measuring, and mitigating attributes that inversely impact the quality and marketability of foods.
  • Leading research developing new sustainable processing technologies to produce healthy, value-added foods from specialty crops.
  • Leading research adding value to plant-based waste materials through development of novel, healthy ingredients and functional foods.

For more than sixty years the Western Regional Research Center of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service has conducted research in support of food and fiber quality, utilization and production at its Albany, CA location. The Center’s research program emphasizes the development and application of new technologies, including agricultural genomics, proteomics, and biotechnology, to accomplish its missions. It also includes the transfer of technology to commercial partners, and collaboration with scientists in academia, other agencies, and the private sector.
