The University of Washington’s Department of Chemical Engineering invites applications for one full-time Assistant Teaching Professor (100% FTE). The Assistant Teaching Professor will be hired on multi-year appointments with a 9-month service period (September 16 through June 15) that may allow for additional opportunities to teach during the summer. While the UW does not offer a path for tenure for teaching-track positions, the position can be renewed, and promotion and advancement are possible. The anticipated start date is September 16, 2021. The initial appointment duration and compensation will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications.

The Department of Chemical Engineering offers a highly collegial and collaborative culture, with a range of teaching and curriculum-development opportunities in undergraduate and master’s level courses. The expected teaching responsibility portfolio will include our Interfaces, Surfaces and Colloids curricula along with additional lecture courses, laboratory courses, service and curriculum management. Additional responsibilities will include stewardship of the Chemical Engineering Shared Instrumentation Facility (SIF), which is a core component of our teaching laboratories and shared research instrumentation. Opportunities exist for coordinating and delivering project-based learning curricula and capstone projects. The successful candidate will join a vibrant faculty conducting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary ground-breaking research, instruction, and collaboration. This position is expected to involve research in the areas of interfacial, colloid, and polymer science use of a variety of laboratory instrumentation. This position will teach a range of classes in the undergraduate Chemical Engineering curriculum. UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Assistant teaching professors at UW are primarily evaluated with regard to their teaching and service. QUALIFICATIONS The position requires a PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related field (or foreign equivalent) and the following prior work experience: • Prior teaching expertise in Interfaces, Surfaces and Colloids or a related subject • Prior teaching expertise in undergraduate Chemical Engineering lab courses • Management of small, shared instrumentation facilities with (at least 10 instruments) that are used for teaching and research Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to: • Demonstrated excellence in teaching with specific experience in process and/or capstone design • Industry/professional experience with a vision toward project-based, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary learning • A commitment to teaching and student mentoring • Experience and a thoughtful strategy for teaching and service that supports our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
