The most appropriate candidates will be those whose activities complement and integrate research programs within the Department of Biochemistry and Duke Microbiome Center and should have demonstrable expertise in the biochemistry, chemical biology, or biology of the microbiome. Research topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to, microbiomes and their constituent microorganisms associated with the human body or environments, or microorganisms from other sources that could be interrogated for novel functions and interactive mechanisms. Successful candidates will have track records of creativity, productivity, and mentorship, as well as a desire to integrate into our exciting, collaborative, and a diverse community. They will be expected to mount a productive and innovative research program, to obtain extramural funding, and to participate actively in graduate and post-graduate education, training, and mentorship. We strongly support an inclusive and anti-racist environment and are committed to the diversification of our ranks and new faculty hires are expected to contribute to promoting such an environment. Preference will be given to applicants at the level of Assistant Professor who would start an independent career at Duke. Interested senior faculty are also welcome to apply but will be considered separately. Candidates must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree. The application materials must include a cover letter accompanied by a one-page statement describing the candidate’s background and efforts at promoting diversity and inclusion, a curriculum vitae, and a three-page statement of research (organized as one-page summary of past research accomplishments and a two-page summary of your future research plans), and 3 letters of recommendation. The diversity statement should address why the candidate believes diversity, inclusion, and equity are important to the academic research enterprise with any example(s) from their experiences and plans for future contributions.
