Job Details

We are seeking a highly driven scientist with a broad interest in protein kinases, to oversee, organize and coordinate the activities of multiple researchers in a dynamic, comprehensive, inter-disciplinary initiative at the Department of Structural Biology, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The Blue Sky Initiative "Seeing the Invisible in Protein Kinases" is supported by $35 million in institutional funding (more information in the St. Jude Strategic Plan 2022–2027, pp 62–63).

The project will extend the ultra-high field NMR spectroscopy and biochemistry approaches developed recently by the Kalodimos lab (Science 370, eabc2754, 2020) to study the human kinome. This is a large-scale project that aims to detect and structurally characterize the distinct conformational states populated by kinases, and to dissect the mechanisms of allosteric regulation and those underpinning oncogenic and drug-resistance mutations. This strategy will be integrated with and complemented by data-science and computational approaches developed by the Babu lab (Nature 587, 650, 2020), to systematically characterize the conformational landscape of the human kinome.

We expect this initiative to have a profound impact on the field, transforming our understanding of protein kinases. We are looking for an enthusiastic scientist to join this project and take a key organizational role.

This is a high-level staff position, and the Prinicipal Scientist will:

  • Oversee the activities of over 40 scientists across different teams performing biochemistry, NMR and computational analyses of different kinases.
  • Organize and integrate the data generated by those teams.
  • Be the contact point for PIs and team leaders for information on all ongoing projects.
  • Identify kinases of biological and medical interest as targets
  • Search and synthesize the relevant literature information on kinase biology as necessary.
  • Prepare written materials for reports, presentations and publications.
  • Take a lead on organizing internal and international scientific meetings
  • Interact with other teams within St. Jude to identify scientific opportunities relevant for the project

Furthermore, the ideal candidate should have a track-record of exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills; outstanding communication skills; be able to absorb, synthesize and integrate different types of information; work independently; and thrive on a highly collaborative and fast-moving environment.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific area is required
  • Ph.D. preferred

Minimum Experience

  • Fifteen (15) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required
  • Thirteen (13) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a Master's degree
  • Eleven (11) years or relevant post-degree work experience is required with a PhD.
  • Prior experience in structural biology, bioinformatics and/or data management are all highly desirable.

What We Offer

Salary is highly competitive (comparable to industry) and employee benefits are outstanding. Relocation assistance is available. Working at St. Jude provides the opportunity to make a tangible difference to pediatric cancer patient care and survival and St. Jude has been consistently ranked in Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Places to Work” list and is exceptionally positively reviewed on GlassDoor.
