The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at New Mexico State University (NMSU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Chemical Education at the Assistant Professor (Position 198136) level beginning August 2022. Our department has strong doctoral and undergraduate programs and promotes research, development, and education in all areas of chemistry and biochemistry. Please see chemistry.nmsu.edu/facultyandstaff/faculty.html for current research areas. The ideal applicant is expected to establish and sustain an externally funded research program, conduct innovative, discipline-based education research (DBER) in the chemical sciences, and help develop and implement new curricula. Candidates are expected to have a strong record of accomplishments in their area.
NMSU is a comprehensive land grant institution located in New Mexico, with strong research programs and a tradition in serving a diverse student population. NMSU is located in the scenic and culturally rich southern New Mexico border region and is classified as a Minority- and Hispanic-Serving Institution by the federal government. For more information, please visit http://www.nmsu.edu.
Required Qualifications: A doctorate in Chemistry or related scientific field is required, with postdoctoral training strongly preferred. The applicant should also have a publication record in the area of chemical education commensurate with appointment to a Ph.D. program. The applicant will be expected to develop an independent, extramurally funded research program and have the ability to teach introductory and advanced chemistry classes.
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a description of proposed discipline-based education research (limited to 3 pages), a statement of teaching interests and philosophy (1 page), and a diversity and inclusion statement*. Applicants must also provide copies of undergraduate and graduate course transcripts, and arrange to have three letters of reference submitted through the application portal. Applications lacking required components may not be reviewed.
*NMSU seeks to elevate research that addresses local and global challenges and to “be a recognized leader in valuing the inclusion of diverse participants and recognizing diversity as an asset among minority-serving, land-grant and space-grant institutions” (NMSU LEADS 2025, Goal 4). We are seeking faculty who will not only contribute to enhancing NMSU’s research profile, but who will also work to increase diversity among the faculty ranks, ensure equity, and foster inclusion. This work may take the form of research, teaching, mentoring, and/or service. Please provide a diversity and inclusion statement addressing (i) your understanding of the broader issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in the context of STEM and groups that have been traditionally under-represented in STEM, (ii) your past contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion, and/or (iii) your vision for future contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM.
