Head of Technology, LGR
Assistant/Associate Adjunct Professor, Biochemistry & Biophysics

About the LGR
The Laboratory for Genomics Research (LGR) is a three-way partnership among UC Berkeley, UCSF and GSK to join forces together under one roof in an immersive collaborative R&D environment to discover and validate novel therapeutic targets and bring better medicines faster to patients with unmet medical needs. The LGR strives to build advanced CRISPR-based genome editing and functional genomics platforms empowered by human genetics and computational biology to discover drug targets with high probability of success, expand our knowledge on the human genome in various disease contexts through mechanistic investigation into previously unknown genes and their networks, and deliver innovative research tools that are optimized and scalable for both academic and drug discovery research labs across the partner institutes.

Narrative (Responsibilities):

• Lead the LGR Technology Team in collaboration with Biology and Computational Teams to develop state-of-the-art pooled and arrayed CRISPR screening platforms employing high-dimensional functional assays based on Perturb-seq, high-content cell imaging, flow cytometry and other omics technologies.
• Generate innovative new ideas for functional genomics and develop them into next-generation platform technologies as principal investigator in collaborative projects with academic and industry partners across UCSF, UC Berkeley, and GSK
• Develop experimental strategies for high-throughput validation of CRISPR sgRNA performance, and lead the Team to design and produce empirically validated, genome-wide arrayed CRISPRn, CRISPRi, and CRISPRa/off sgRNA library collections
• Lead the Team in developing highly scalable automation protocols for 96-well and 384-well plate-based approaches to CRISPR sgRNA cloning, plasmid DNA preparation, lipid-based transfection, RNP-based electroporation, lentiviral production and QC, and infection of cell lines, primary cells, and iPSC-derived differentiated cells.
• Mentor and coach the Team composed of scientists and engineers of varying levels of experience and education (both PhD and BS) for sustained research productivity and professional development
• Present research results to internal and external audiences including the LGR Joint Steering Committee and CRISPR scientific community through publication in peer-reviewed journals and academic conferences

Required Qualifications:

• PhD or doctoral degree in biology, genetics, genomics, chemistry, physics, engineering, or a related discipline
• Supervisory experience in leading a team of scientists and engineers

Preferred Qualifications:

• Expertise in a combination of two or more of the following technology areas:

• Solid background in molecular biology and related laboratory skills including CRISPR sgRNA selection and library design, vector engineering, and gene expression assays
• Foundational knowledge in CRISPR genome editing and functional genomics involving pooled and arrayed CRISPR screening of cell-based phenotypic assays using lentiviral and non-viral delivery methods
• Hands-on or supervisory experience in automated high throughput screening platforms integrated with various liquid handlers, plate readers, cell imagers, or other instruments. Familiarity with lab automation and LIMS
• Working knowledge in genomic and NGS technologies including DNA-seq, RNA-seq, single cell omics, spatial genomics, and epigenomic profiling (ATAC-seq, Hi-C)

• Outstanding project management skills demonstrated through collaborative projects across organizational and functional boundaries
• Strong written and verbal communication skills demonstrated by publication of research papers and conference presentations
• Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
