Are you passionate about your work and dream of working at a state-of-the-art experimental facility to explore sophisticated problems? Join our creative team and tackle issues for our nation's security! We are seeking a results oriented Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct groundbreaking research to study/develop innovative separation processes and sensors based on nanoscale electrophoretic and electrochemical concepts. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers at both Sandia and other DOE National Laboratories.

You will:

  • Design, test, and study nanocapillary electrophoresis devices and trace ion signatures by electrochemical detection

  • Conduct fundamental electrochemical kinetics studies to understand and optimize device designs

  • Explore nanoconfinement effects on electrophoretic transport via electrochemical and materials characterizations

  • Develop technical leadership skills, assist writing technical reports, publish journal articles, and communicate key findings to both internal customers and the broader scientific community at conferences

Functions of this job include

  • Collaborating with a team of chemists, material scientists and others to design, fabricate, and study the fundamental aspects of a nanocapillary electrophoresis device

  • Performing original laboratory studies to develop and understand these advanced concepts for nanoscale electrophoretic separations and electrochemical sensing

  • Demonstrating leadership and self-motivation within a collaborative team environment

  • Publishing findings in leading journals and presenting research at scientific conferences

    Required:
  • You have, or are pursuing, a PhD in chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or a related field and possess a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).

  • Proven track record of original work, e.g. professional conference presentations and publications in refereed journals

  • Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

    Desired:
  • Experience in electrophoresis, including within nanochannels

  • Experience in analytical electrochemistry

  • Experience with high vacuum systems

  • Experience fabricating micro and/or nanofluidic devices

  • Experience with materials characterizations, e.g. SEM, XRD, SIMS, and XRF

  • High quality communication skills, or a desire to develop these qualities

  • Ability to develop and maintain collaboration with leaders in the scientific community within and outside of Sandia National Laboratories

  • Curiosity about the world and an interest in connecting one's research to the larger context of science, society, and national security

  • A record of academic achievement as proven by high GPAs for relevant undergraduate degree(s) and graduate degree(s)

  • Effective interpersonal skills that build effective scientific collaborations with a diverse population of researchers

  • Candidates should also have proven creative problem solving and effective time management skills

  • Outstanding work ethic and passion for discovery

    Department Description:

The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts collaborative groundbreaking research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enables the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings. Our main research focus is directed along three thrusts:

  • Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications (including energy storage and corrosion)

  • Magnetic, Dielectric and Electronic Materials Science and Applications (including ferroics and composites)

  • Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications (i.e., for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, membranes, water treatment, and catalysis)

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
