The Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for the endowed Isbell Chair in Chemistry from well-established scholars beginning August 1, 2022. The Isbell Chair supports the exciting growth of sciences at AU, including the new Hall of Science, a state-of-the-art research and teaching facility which houses the Departments of Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, and Neuroscience. Depending on qualifications, the appointee will be recommended for tenure at the associate or full professor rank at the time of hiring.

The faculty member hired into this role will continue their commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service. Central to the Isbell Chair’s efforts will be inclusive excellence to support AU’s commitment to learning for and leading toward an equitable world. The Isbell chair will be expected to lead and mentor a dynamic and diverse research team of undergraduate and graduate students.

Candidates should submit a cover letter, a CV demonstrating a strong history of past and current funding, a description of their current research program with statements on their future research goals that assesses how these goals integrate with the Department of Chemistry at AU, a statement of teaching philosophy, a statement demonstrating how they view their role in supporting and fostering an inclusive and equitable chemical enterprise, and a list of 3 references.

About the Department

There are currently 7 tenure-line faculty and 5 professional teaching faculty members in the department. Collaboration has always been a pathway to success for our faculty members. Whether that collaboration occurs within the department, within the university, with researchers at the local national laboratories, or with other national and international scholars, scholarly output is the primary focus of our faculty. The department offers an ACS-accredited chemistry major and a biochemistry major. Our undergraduate students are research active and many are authors on published manuscripts. The department houses a suite of analytical instrumentation including TEM with EDS capabilities, SEM with EDS capabilities, NMR, GC-MS, LC-MS, HPLC, FPLC, powder X-ray diffractometer, DSC, TGA, DMA, FTIR, UV-Vis, and more.

About the University

American University is a private institution, recently classified in the “High Research” category by the Carnegie Classification system. The university has shown a strong commitment to supporting and growing the sciences with its recent emphasis on building infrastructure. The Don Myers Technology and Innovation Building opened in 2017 and houses the Departments of Physics, Mathematics and Statistics, and Computer Science. The Hall of Science, which will house the research program of the current hire, was completed in July of 2020.
