This position will support basic research and development on the Polymers and Responsive Materials Team in the Materials & Manufacturing Directorate. The researcher shall utilize a continuous flow chemistry system to explore novel syntheses and nanomaterial functionalization chemistries in coordination with on-site scientists and external partners. The Research Scientist shall have experience with synthetic chemical techniques (such as reactive intermediate chemistry), nanomaterial synthesis and functionalization chemistry. Familiarity with reaction optimization, small molecule synthesis and/or polymer synthesis is also desirable. Experience with NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR, UV-Vis Spectroscopy as well as other materials characterization and analytical techniques is preferred. This position sits within an interdisciplinary team, as such the ability to communicate effectively across a wide variety of technical disciplines and roles is strongly desired.
Specific topics of interest may include applications in composites, electronic sensors, optoelectronics, or textile integrated electronics.
While not required, experience with (or a desired to learn) continuous flow chemistry (i.e. Vapourtec flow system), AI/ML for materials/chemistry, automation, and experience with some computer languages (i.e. Python) would be viewed positively.
- Ph.D. in Chemistry or related discipline
- Experience with nanomaterial and chemical synthesis in a research setting
- Experience with various types of synthesis and functionalization methods
