Job Details

Background: Loyola University Chicago (LUC), College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry seeks qualified candidates for an appointment as Assistant Professor (tenure track), beginning Fall 2022. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has 31 full-time faculty serving ~400 majors and is located on the university’s Lakeshore Campus. For more information about the department, please visit its web site at https://www.luc.edu/chemistry.

Located on Chicago’s vibrantly multicultural North Side, LUC is committed to creating an inclusive, responsive community of faculty, students, and staff. As an urban-based Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry dedicated to mentoring a diverse student body, many of whom come from under-represented and under-served populations, we especially encourage applications from candidates from under-represented groups. We also encourage applications from scholars committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines) and the successful pursuit of external grants.

Duties and Responsibilities: This position involves maintaining a competitive, externally funded research program and participating in undergraduate- and graduate-level teaching. Candidates will contribute to teaching biochemistry and/or other portions of the curriculum (based on the candidate’s preference and expertise). In addition to teaching and pursuing their own scholarship, candidates are also expected to involve undergraduate students in research and to engage in service for the department, college, and university.

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Biochemistry or a closely related field and have completed or currently hold a postdoctoral appointment. Evidence of significant scholarly activity in both the prior doctoral and postdoctoral positions is preferred. Preference also will be given to candidates whose research record and interests focus on fundamental aspects of biochemistry. Applicants must demonstrate the potential for classroom instructional excellence and a strong ethic of student mentorship or provide evidence of such capacities. The candidate also should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.

Special Instructions to Applicants: Applicants should submit (1) a current Curriculum Vitae, (2) a teaching statement, (3) a concise future research plan, and (4) a letter of interest to www.careers.luc.edu. (5) They should also provide evidence that attests to their research/teaching performance and experience, and the names and addresses of three individuals prepared to advise on their professional qualifications for this position. (6) In addition, they should include a statement addressing past or potential contributions to mentoring a diverse student body through research, teaching, and other channels and engaging a diverse community through scholarship and service. References will not be contacted immediately but might be consulted at subsequent points in the review process. Please direct inquiries and further inquiries to:

Loyola University Chicago is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer with a strong commitment to hiring for our mission and diversifying our faculty. The University seeks to increase the diversity of its professoriate, workforce and undergraduate and graduate student populations because broad diversity - including a wide range of individuals who contribute to a robust academic environment - is critical to achieving the University's mission of excellence in education, research, educational access and services in an increasingly diverse society. Therefore, in holistically accessing the many qualifications of each applicant, we would factor favorably an individual's record of conduct that includes experience with an array of diverse perspectives, as well as a wide variety of different educational, research or other work activities. Among other qualifications, we would also factor favorably experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic career or degrees.
