 Job Description:
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (www.mse.iastate.edu) at Iowa State University (ISU) invites applications for a tenure-track/tenured Assistant, Associate or Full Professor position in technical areas contributory to its education and research efforts. Priority consideration will be given to candidates with expertise in biomaterials and biomedical applications. The experience level may span experimental, computational, or clinical research related to synthesis, structure, properties, and performance of soft/cellular materials and tissues, hard/soft material interfaces, prosthetic implants or device materials, and biomimetic structures. Exceptional candidates in other related areas will also be considered. Candidates with commensurate experience and proven track records will be considered for a tenured Associate or Full Professor ranks.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a vibrant research program, develop an innovative course portfolio at the undergraduate and graduate level in materials science and engineering, and engage in professional and institutional service and leadership. All faculty members are expected to interact collegially and maintain the highest standard of integrity and ethics.

The candidate will have opportunities to engage in significant interdisciplinary collaborations on the Iowa State University campus. Collaborative options include Ames Laboratory (www.ameslab.gov) and its Sensitive Instrument Facility, the Materials Preparation Center, and the Critical Materials Institute, the Center for Nondestructive Evaluation (www.cnde.iastate.edu); the Center for Advanced Nonferrous Structural Alloys (https://canfsa.org); the Nanovaccine Institute (https://www.nanovaccine.iastate.edu/); the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (www.cbirc.iastate.edu); the Bioeconomy Institute (www.biorenew.iastate.edu); the ISU Office of Biotechnology (www.biotech.iastate.edu); the Microelectronics Research Center; and the College of Veterinary Medicine (https://vetmed.iastate.edu/).

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering has 28 faculty members, including members of the National Academy of Engineering, a Nobel Prize winner, and three members of the National Academy of Inventors. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering has about200 undergraduate students and about55 graduate students. Sponsored research expenditures of the department are over $13M per year. Required Qualifications

  • Ph D. or equivalent in materials science, biomedical engineering, or a related area
  • Experience or training relevant to teaching graduate and undergraduate courses
  • Associate or Full Professor candidates will have demonstrated research and teaching accomplishments and the potential for continued excellence according to the level of appointment sought

  Preferred Qualifications

  • S. and/or M.S. in materials science and engineering, biomedical engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated track record of published research in the field of materials science and engineering.
  • Experience in the preparation, submission, and administration of research grant proposals pursuant to targeted funding opportunities, including federal, state, non-profit, and industrial sponsorship programs.
  • Experience in university-level teaching, including undergraduate and graduate levels, especially in the topical areas described above.
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in research.
  • Significant industrial collaborations/experience in a related area.
  • Demonstrated experience in diversity, equity and inclusion.
