The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is a nationally ranked, research-intensive unit with over $25 million dollars of research-grade instrumentation. The Surface Analysis Facility is an integral part of the departmental, college, and university infrastructure. The facility combines a number of instruments including an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, ToF-SIMS, and AFM-Raman microscope.

Under limited direction of the Chairperson, the Manager of the Surface Analysis Facility is the principal staff member reporting to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. The Manager oversees the operation of the facility and supervises the technical personnel consisting of postdoctoral researchers and graduate assistants. The Manager is responsible for current operation and future direction of the facility in a manner that maximizes the Facility’s impact on the research of the users. In addition to keeping instruments in prime operating condition, he/she serves as intellectual driver of the surface analysis research, manages the Facility budget, seeks outside support to enhance the budget, and assists Faculty in writing grant proposals to acquire new equipment. These activities directly impact the research of the users and the associated contracts and grants that support their work.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages the day-to-day supervision and operation of the Surface Analysis Facility, to include supervising postdoctoral researchers and graduate research assistants.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for optimal performance of the facility.
  • Manages facility budget and support to maximize impact on user research.
  • Sets future direction of the facility (acquisition of new equipment; modification of existing equipment; revision of sample protocols) through detailed reading of and familiarity with the scientific literature and through participation in national and international meetings focused on surface analysis.
  • Designs and develops surface analysis research protocols to assist user research, including planning and interpreting experiments and suggesting potential follow-up studies.
  • Assures reliable operation of instruments and the integrity of data obtained from them.
  • Validates instrument performance through the regular analysis of standards.
  • Works directly with instrument vendors and repair specialists to troubleshoot problems and perform preventative maintenance.
  • Writes or assists in the preparation of grant proposals for the acquisition of new instrumentation.
  • Where appropriate, co-authors scientific publications with users in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Trains users on proper use of instruments and interpretation of the experimental data.
  • Organizes and teaches practical classes in surface analysis at the graduate level and helps set up the surface analysis laboratory experiments for undergraduate courses.
  • Demonstrates the capabilities of surface analysis equipment as appropriate.
  • Coordinates formal and informal hazard reviews of all lab research equipment and procedures in the Surface Analysis Facility.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or related field with four years of specialization in surface analysis.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of surface analytical techniques, with emphasis on XPS, ToF-SIMS and Raman microscopy.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to effectively manage and/or interact with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of research methodology, principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of equipment.
  • Knowledge of electronics.
  • Knowledge of vacuum systems.
  • Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in surface analysis.
  • Ability to maintain expertise by reading the literature and attending scientific meetings.
  • Ability to undertake independent or collaborative research.
  • Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions.
  • Ability to gather and analyze statistical data and generate reports.
  • Ability to understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to design, organize, and coordinate scientific research projects.
  • Ability to anticipate changing experimental demands, plan for acquisition of needed instrumentation, and establish new experimental procedures.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities, cultures and backgrounds.
