The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Carnegie Mellon University is accepting applications for tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of assistant professor in the areas of Electronic Materials, Structural Materials, and Materials for Energy, although particularly compelling candidates will be considered at higher ranks.  A joint appointment between MSE and other engineering or science departments at CMU may also be considered.

The MSE department is a leader in the institutional, national, and international materials community, recognized for excellence, innovation, and the impact of our research and educational programs. Our success is based on a strong practice of inclusion. We take pride and active steps in considering diverse applicant pools in terms of gender, race, veteran status, and disability. Carnegie Mellon University further seeks to meet the needs of dual-career couples and is a member of the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC) that assists with dual-career searches.

Our mission is to deliver educational programs in materials that will produce graduates who become leaders in local and national industries, governments, and academic institutions. To support this mission, we deliver a rigorous, modern, and innovative curriculum; conduct research that is collaborative, contributes to our fundamental knowledge of materials, and provides pioneering solutions to global challenges; and create a positive and inclusive culture that encourages and celebrates diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and contributions among the faculty, staff, and students.

We seek  individuals who hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and have demonstrated commitment to the values embodied by our vision and mission. Tenure-track faculty carry a moderate teaching load that allows time for quality research and close involvement with students. We expect tenure-track faculty to establish and grow an internationally recognized research program, contribute to innovations in teaching, and demonstrate a passion for mentoring and advising students.

Review of applications will begin after November 1, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled. The expected start date is the Fall 2022 semester. E-mail inquiries concerning these positions may be sent to the respective search committees as noted below.

Interested candidates should submit applications electronically via Interfolio including a cover letter, contact information for three references and three statements: Statement of Research Experience and Interests, Statement of Teaching Experience and Interests, and a Diversity Statement that outlines how you have contributed to, or plan to contribute to, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
