Job Details

The University of California, Riverside's (UCR) Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE) invites applications for a Professor with Tenure position, who will serve as the Director of the BCOE Winston Chung Global Energy Center (WCGEC). The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and leading the Center, in addition to regular faculty duties that involve research and teaching. Successful candidates should have a proven and active record of vibrant leadership experience and externally funded research. While all qualified candidates will be considered, distinguished scientists in academia, senior industry leaders, and senior lead scientists in government research laboratories are particularly encouraged to apply.

WCGEC is a multi-disciplinary research center focusing on the broad areas of energy and sustainability. The Center was established in January 2011 with a $10 million donation from Winston Chung; a Chinese battery technology scientist, inventor, and entrepreneur. The gift was later augmented with an additional $5 million to establish the Sustainable Integrated Grid Initiative (SIGI) — a WCGEC project intended to demonstrate “smart integration” of battery technologies, renewable energy, and advanced dispatch controls through field implementations at UCR and the City of Riverside.

The current research directions of WCGEC are divided into two broad areas. The area of Energy and Power Systems (Area 1) covers integration of distributed and renewable energy resources, power distribution system and power transmission system modernization, power system protection, advanced power electronics, cyber and physical security in power systems, and other related topics. The area of Energy Devices and Materials (Area 2) includes topics such as advanced and scalable battery technologies, fuel cells, super-capacitors, solar cells, and solar thermal technologies. The successful candidate should have in-depth expertise in one of these two areas, and should also demonstrate clear potential for leading multidisciplinary research efforts within both areas, in collaborative partnership with the related BCOE departments and programs: Electrical and Computer Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering.

This search is open only to candidates external to UCR. Review of applications will begin immediately and the search will continue until the position is filled. For full consideration, candidates are highly encouraged to apply by December 14, 2021. To apply: Please submit a cover letter, current curriculum vitae, contact information for three references, a Statement of Research, a Statement of Leadership, a Statement of Teaching, and a Contribution to Diversity Statement to the AP recruit website at https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/JPF01467. The appointment is expected to begin July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Advancement through the faculty ranks at the University of California is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations, occurring every 2-3 years, each of which includes substantial peer input. For more information regarding the specific areas of research interest and application procedures, please visit http://www.wcgec.ucr.edu/. For inquiries and questions, please contact Professor Hamed Mohsenian-Rad at hamed@ece.ucr.edu.
