UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO, DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY is seeking to hire a person in the position of Director of Undergraduate Laboratories effective January 2022 and pending budgetary approval. The position will be primarily associated with the management of the undergraduate teaching laboratories in every respect, write standard operating procedures (SOPs), design databases at the intermediate level, develop and write lab manuals and safety procedures. The position requires an individual with strong oral and writing skills, able to communicate with undergraduate students and to have demonstrated ability in development of experimental procedures for different experiments as well as the technical skills for maintaining spectrometers, pH meters, analytical balances and other instruments. Collaborate with organic and analytical faculty to develop and introduce appropriate experiments for the organic chemistry and analytical chemistry courses, oversee the organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and instrumental analysis laboratories. Directly supervise two to five civil service positions, as well as extra help, student help and graduate students serving as Teaching Assistants in the lab courses. Direct the annual Lab Safety Orientation for incoming graduate students, responsible for student safety in undergrad instructional laboratories, and chair the faculty Storeroom Committee.

The minimum education requirement will be a Ph.D. in chemistry with a minimum of 2 years work experience in a chemical laboratory that employs analytical chemistry instruments. Demonstration of experience with working with diverse communities is also critical. A minimum of two years related experience in a position involving laboratory management and experiment supervision. Demonstrated knowledge in developing general chemistry instructional laboratory experiments and developing and writing lab manuals and safety procedures. Knowledge of laboratory safety and mechanical and technical troubleshooting skills required. Experience in an academic institution preferred.
