Assistant Professor of Biochemistry (Tenure Track)

Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of the Incarnate Word invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Biochemistry at the Assistant Professor level. The department is ACS-certified and the Biochemistry Program is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), with BS degree programs requiring an undergraduate research experience. This position would begin in August of 2022.

Required Education and Work Experience

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Biochemistry or closely related area. Applicants must demonstrate undergraduate teaching experience, as well as expertise in biochemistry-related research through a record of peer-reviewed publication within the last five (5) years.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates will have undergraduate chemistry/biochemistry related teaching experience. Preference will also be given to candidates with postdoctoral experience and/or those with experience as an undergraduate research mentor.

Description of Job Duty:Responsibilities will include teaching majors and nonmajors courses in chemistry and biochemistry; developing an undergraduate research training program; assisting in biochemistry curriculum development; advising biochemistry majors; and participating in university and community service.

Essential Functions

Official duties and responsibilities of faculty members at the University include teaching, scholarship, service and professional activities. This position will function to:

• Teach majors and nonmajors courses in chemistry and biochemistry;

• Develop a biochemistry related undergraduate research training program;

• Assist and lead in biochemistry curriculum development;

• Advise biochemistry majors and participate in university and community service activities;

• Maintain the highest standards of professional ethics consistent with the UIW Mission;

• Perform regular scholarly research and publication;

Provide service to the department, college, university, community, and profession;

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

• Ability to teach undergraduate biochemistry lectures and laboratory courses as well as introductory chemistry courses for non-majors;

• Proficiency in use of instructional technology;

• Desire to collaborate with department faculty and students;

• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures;

• Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

Required Education

Ph.D. in Biochemistry or a closely related field. Note that ABD with expected completion by 08/14/2022 will be considered.

Required Work Experience

Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate laboratory or lecture courses.

Demonstrated experience in biochemistry related research with a record of peer-reviewed publication within the last five (5) years.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior teaching experience and/or postdoctoral training;

Experience as undergraduate research mentor.
