Position: Staff Fellow (Chemist)

Introduction:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), is seeking a highly qualified Chemist for the Nanotechnology CORE facility whose primary responsibility would be to provide scientific analysis to support nanomaterial characterization. This core facility, located in Jefferson, Arkansas, is equipped with the state-of -the art equipment and trained staff to properly characterize and detect nanoscale materials. The NanoCore has been designed to support research investigators with nanomaterial characterization, conduct research on nanomaterials to elucidate toxicity, biocompatibility, in vitro and in vivo.

 Duties/Responsibilities

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

The Chemist provides scientific analysis to support nanomaterial characterization. The incumbent needs to possesses an extensive knowledge in chemistry, analytical methodologies, and techniques for nanomaterial assessment. He/She must be knowledgeable and experienced in conducting nanomaterial size measurements utilizing various scattering and diffraction techniques (DLS, LD, NTA), spectroscopic measurements using UV-Vis, NMR, Infrared, Fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy and Mass spectrometry techniques, and separation techniques such as HPLC, FPLC, SEC and or Field Flow Fractionation. In addition, the candidate will perform quantitative analysis for metal nanoparticle samples by ICP-MS in native solution state, and in biological samples to aid in vitro and in vivo studies.

The Chemist is responsible for the daily operations of the laboratory.  He/She will be accountable for the chemical inventory of the lab, and maintenance of samples. The incumbent reviews literature to identify potentially usable procedures, demonstrates the ability to select appropriate procedures, and performs standard processes under minimum supervision.  He/She develops and writes standard operating procedures for instruments, assists in analyzing data and composing reports.  In addition, the incumbent will synthesize nanomaterial for research projects, coordinate research with leading scientists, and reports on scientific findings. The incumbent will work with the NanoCore Director and the Team Leader to prepare reports and manuscripts for submission in scientific literature and scientific conference.  Furthermore, the incumbent will be responsible for training laboratory personnel on state-of-the art analytical equipment.  The incumbent is expected to perform other duties as assigned.  The ideal candidate would be self-sufficient and require minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Physics, Material Science, or Engineering with demonstrated prior experience in conducting analytical chemistry work with nanomaterial.
