JOB SUMMARY

ISS is seeking a Chemist to work in the Emergency Response Branch at the CDC. The Emergency Response Branch (ERB) develops and performs unique laboratory tests to assess chemical exposures during a public health emergency or terrorist event. In a public health emergency, the rapid detection and accurate identification of causative chemical agents can be crucial for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. ERB measures multiple biomarkers in clinical samples using a variety of analytical techniques. The selected applicant will serve as a team member in the Toxins and Drugs of Abuse Laboratory within ERB providing needed analytical testing, method development, data reporting, and data management skills. The selected applicant will have to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance. Relocation support is not available for this position.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and validate LC-HRMS methods for detection of drugs and toxins in clinical specimens, synthetic products, and in vitro metabolite studies.
  • Create high quality mass spectra for library development and use in analytical methods.
  • Draft technical communication documents including but not limited to protocols, logbooks, meeting minutes, project updates, presentations, and CLIA documents.
  • Generate and analyze data, prepare written reports of findings, and maintain a laboratory notebook.
  • Participate in scheduled meetings and provide updates to ensure project progression.
  • Operation and maintain essential scientific instrumentation associated with HPLC, liquid handler automation, mass spectrometers and other instrumentation with logs detailing the performance and functioning of laboratory instruments; current systems include Agilent, Sciex, and Thermo.
  • Obtain training and provide assistance with projects in other areas that meet the need of the group but remain in the scope of the assignment.
  • Provide branch support for procurement, inventory, sample storage, laboratory automation and exercise/event logistics.
  • Comply with universal precautions for handling of biological samples and biological waste

THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED

  • M.S. or Ph.D. level chemist with 0-2 years relevant experience in analytical chemistry, clinical chemistry, or related scientific fields
  • A strong understanding of and experience with high resolution mass spectrometry, chromatography, and sample preparation of clinical or complex samples.
  • Highly organized, possessing strong communication skills, able to keep detailed records and work collegially with others
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory safety
  • Good communication and writing skills
  • Must be able to obtain a DoD Security Clearance at the Secret level
  • Must be a US Citizen.

THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED

  • Experience with clinical samples is preferred (human blood, plasma and urine).
  • Skills with data export and evaluation within LIMS systems is a plus
