The University of Mary Washington Department of Chemistry and Physics invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in analytical chemistry, beginning August 16, 2022.The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching instrumental analysis, analytical chemistry, general chemistry, other courses (depending on expertise) such as environmental chemistry, and developing new courses that contribute to the liberal arts and sciences mission of the university.A Ph.D. in chemistry and experience with instrumentation are required.Experience in instrument training, maintenance and repair (LC-MS, GC-MS, HPLC, spectroscopy) as well as prior college teaching experience are desired.Prospective applicants are encouraged to visit the department’s website at https://cas.umw.edu/chemistry/.

Fredericksburg is in close proximity to many government labs, non-profit organizations, and private businesses offering opportunities for collaborative research and student internship opportunities. 

The appointee can look forward to joining a faculty of 6 chemists who are committed to research that engages undergraduate students. The appointee will be expected to develop an original research program to complement existing departmental research programs, housed in and utilizing our newly renovated Jepson Science Center with expanded research spaces, including an instrumentation lab with UV-Vis and fluorescence spectrometers, ICP-AES, GC-MS, LC, and a new 400MHz NMR. . The normal teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. In addition to the regular annual 9-month contract, opportunities for summer research and teaching are available. Continuing professional development and participation in departmental and college-wide service are expected.Completion of the Ph.D. is required by August 16, 2022.
