What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a visionary and team-oriented R&D Manager to lead the Nanoscale Sciences Department (1874), within the Semiconductor, Nano and Quantum Sciences Group (1870). Our department works in collaboration with departments across Sandia and R&D teams external to Sandia to advance the fundamental understanding of material properties, mechanisms and performance at the nanoscale regime utilizing an extensive range of experimental capabilities integrated with computational material science collaborations. Our innovative materials science research enables the collaborative development of creative disruptive solutions for Sandia's evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities have broad scientific and intellectual property impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings. Our main research focus is directed along two materials thrusts:

  • Electrochemical Materials Science
  • Ferroic, Dielectric, and Electronic Materials Science

We also partner with others to reap the harvest of our materials research activity to realize intellectual property development and applications in a third R&D thrust:

  • Sensor and Device Realization and Integration

In addition to our core deterrence mission, our materials science activities impact next generation energy storage, grid, electric vehicle applications and other National Security mission needs. In addition to cross-cutting interactions within Sandia National Laboratories, the Department has numerous cross-cutting interactions with other National/Government Labs, Industry and Academia. As a result, the Department Manager identifies, develops, and facilitates these interactions as needed. The Department Manager will lead the evolutionary development of vision and strategy for the Department in collaboration with department R&D personnel and the management team within the 1870 Group and Sandia’s Materials, Physical and Chemical Sciences Center (Center 1800). The Manager will steward the department’s capabilities, develop and mentor associated research staff and technologists, lead the advancement of associated experimental and facility capabilities, and guide the development of R&D portfolios that utilize and advance the technical abilities of the staff. The Manager will also foster a Department research environment that supports the positive mentoring and safety of various interns and postdoctoral researchers associated with the Department.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Serve as an ambassador for the Department’s research activity to various internal and external parties
  • Continually guide and evolve the Department’s Materials Science R&D direction and foster an inclusive research environment that encourages scientific and inventive innovation for developing disruptive mission solutions
  • Use and expand your technical expertise to help guide the Department’s future direction
  • Foster the development of staff, technologists, postdoctoral researchers, and student interns
  • Host visiting scientists and customers engaged in the Department’s R&D activities
  • Ensure the safe and secure operation and steward the Department’s considerable innovative R&D lab and instrument resources

Qualifications We Require

  • A bachelor’s and an advanced degree in materials science, chemistry, engineering, physics, or a related field
  • Eight years’ proven scientific and/or engineering experience
  • Solid interpersonal skills as evidenced by a track record of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at professional scientific conferences and/or successful program leadership with internal and/or external customers (a list of publications should be included in the CV)
  • Able to acquire a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire

  • PhD in materials science, chemistry, engineering, physics, or related field
  • 2 or more years of experience managing a Science and Technology (S&T) organization, or the equivalent program leadership experience
  • Active DOE Q-level clearance
  • Experience developing new R&D opportunities
  • Experience conducting or managing R&D in the fields of energy storage, corrosion or advanced electronic or ferroic materials

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
