Chemist Postdoctoral Fellow (Heavy Element Chemistry Group) - 94447
Organization:  CH-Chemical Sciences

The Glenn T. Seaborg Center at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab, https://www.lbl.gov/) is looking for an exceptional laboratory-based Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Heavy Element Chemistry Program, the mission of which is to explore fundamental chemistry of all of the actinide elements, from actinium through lawrencium.

You will be responsible for conducting experiments to elucidate actinide chemistry and reactivity. For most experiments, electrospray ionization is employed to explore the formation of cations and anions of actinide atoms, molecules, coordination complexes and clusters, in the gas phase. Chemistry of these ions is probed in a quadrupole ion trap, primarily by ion-molecule reactions and collision induced dissociation. Corresponding reactivity may be investigated in condensed phases, and isotope effects will be probed. There is close interaction with theory efforts to more fully understand and interpret the experimental results. You will be involved in all aspects of the research, including developing hypotheses, conceiving and performing novel experiments, interpreting experiment and theory results, and ultimately reporting findings as formal presentations and refereed journal papers.

What You Will Do:

  • Conceive, develop and perform novel hypothesis-based experiments to investigate chemistry and reactivity of actinide-containing ions having dimensions from atoms to molecules to clusters
  • Use and maintain existing instrumentation.
  • Effectively and quickly interpret complex experimental results, and promptly adjust research plans accordingly.
  • Exhibit excellent scientific communication skills, including in preparation of manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and in oral presentations at scientific meetings and conferences.
  • Effectively communicate and interact with colleagues and collaborators, including both experimentalists and theorists, as well as other research groups at LBNL and UC Berkeley Campus.
  • Contribute to high safety standards and infrastructure of the Berkeley Lab Heavy Element Chemistry Group.
  • Actively participate in group seminars and project meetings.

What is Required:

  • Demonstrated Experience in one or more of the following:  inorganic synthesis and characterization; radiochemistry; experimental gas-phase physical chemistry; advanced applications of quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometry; development of sophisticated instrumentation
  • Background in analytical, physical, inorganic, nuclear chemistry, and/or related field of science.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively guide and train junior researchers.
  • Familiarity with basic methodologies and applications of computational chemistry.
  • Familiarity with basic concepts of actinide chemistry.
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related discipline, with no more than 3 years previous postdoctoral experience.
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishment and achievement documented by scientific publications and presentations.
  • Evidence of ability to work as an independent researcher with a high level of scientific judgment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform work in a safe manner, and in full accord with all applicable regulations and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and effectively communicate with colleagues and peers within a diverse research team.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
