Join a NIH-funded study of dietary supplement ingredient content to support dietary intake research! The research is based on fundamental principles of analytical chemistry, nutrition, and public health. The successful candidate will provide extensive research management and technical expertise as a Senior Research Project Lead. This position requires the ability to use technical knowledge to make judgments and decisions, and to work independently as well as cooperatively as a team member to achieve project goals within deadlines.

This is a full-time contracted position with a research study that has been continuously funded for 17 years. Excellent health, vacation and retirement benefits are included. Salary is commensurate with qualifications. This position will begin with remote work and then transition to a hybrid of telework and on-site work in Beltsville, MD.

Note: This is not a laboratory position. Samples, including quality control materials, are sent to collaborating and contracted laboratories for analysis.

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Lead nutrition research projects related to multiple dietary supplement studies and manage the work of team members
  2. Plan the laboratory testing of dietary supplements with contracted and collaborating laboratories, incorporating knowledge of appropriate methodologies, quality control, and laboratory data review, including disintegration and dissolution testing of various dosage forms
  3. Research relevant aspects of vitamin, mineral, botanical, and other ingredients in dietary supplements, including methods of analysis, categorization of products, product marketing and sales information, etc. Apply researched information to project planning.
  4. Provide leadership for one or more of the following projects:
  5. Coordinate new research projects on components in both food and DS (e.g., iodine, purines, nitrites/nitrates, glucosinolates)
  6.  Manage an information technology (IT) consulting contract for the project website, including maintenance and releases
  7. Collaborate with in-house and/or contracted statisticians for complex statistical work
  8. Plan the laboratory testing of dietary supplements with contracted and collaborating laboratories, incorporating knowledge of appropriate methodologies, quality control, and laboratory data review, including disintegration and dissolution testing of various dosage forms
  9. Analyze research data using Excel and other software, including graphing and other data visualizations to identify trends and answer research questions
  10. Provide review and assessment for other aspects of the study, including sampling plans for sample purchase, database development and website design
  11. Document decisions, write reports and proposals, and prepare presentations
  12. Present research findings at scientific meetings and publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum requirements: MS in Science plus at least 5 years of experience in scientific research, and at least 1 year in a leadership or supervisory role.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in science, plus at least 3 years of experience in scientific research, and at least 1 year in a leadership or supervisory role.

Required experience:  Extensive experience researching the scientific literature, and writing reports, proposals, and publications. Experience with statistics and data analysis. Excellent communication and analytical thinking skills. Must be able to work with a high degree of initiative and self-motivation; must possess excellent time and project management skills; and be able to handle multiple priorities and resolve complex problems.

Preferred experience: Expertise with analytical testing of ingredients and components of dietary supplements or foods, quality control methods for laboratory testing, and performance testing of dosage forms; experience with nutrition and nutrition research; extensive experience with statistical analysis of data, programming, and database development.
