The ACS-accredited Department of Chemistry at Muskingum University invites applications for a tenure-track organic chemist faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in the Fall semester of 2022. We are seeking an individual who embraces undergraduate teaching and will be pivotal in building a vibrant organic chemistry program. The successful candidate will be effective in teaching and mentoring a range of learners, from non-science majors, those interested in the health sciences and nutrition, to those seeking admission to medical professional schools and graduate study in chemistry. Ability to teach biochemistry classes is highly preferred.
Teaching responsibilities will include organic chemistry, introductory chemistry, and chemistry courses for non-science majors, together with the possibility of teaching upper level courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise.
A PhD in chemistry by the start date is required; ABD candidates will be considered, with the understanding that the terminal degree must be completed within one year and rank will be instructor. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching, capacity for impactful research, and a commitment to service to the University. Additional qualifications are proven ability to work within a team environment and the capacity for visible involvement in the broader southeastern Ohio community as a connector of businesses and students to facilitate applied learning opportunities.
Muskingum is a comprehensive university with a strong liberal arts tradition located just seventy miles east of Columbus, Ohio, in the village of New Concord. The university’s total undergraduate, graduate, and adult-learner student population is approximately 2,500.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, statements of teaching philosophy and research plans, unofficial graduate and undergraduate transcripts, and a list of three professional references with contact information and relationship to the applicant to chemsearch@muskingum.edu. Questions may be directed to Dr. Lois Zook-Gerdau, Chair, Chemistry Department at lzook@muskingum.edu. Review of applications will begin on January 17, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. Appointment to this position is conditional upon successful completion of a background check through the University’s background check agency.
