DEI STEM Cohort Positions
The University of Rhode Island seeks to hire a cohort of three Tenure-Track Assistant Professors in the STEM disciplines with documented expertise in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). These three tenure-track position lines will be in the departments of Chemistry, Mathematics and a combined Cell and Molecular Biology/Computer Science and Statistics. These are in addition to an advertised SoTL Biological Sciences faculty line.

We seek candidates committed to developing a vibrant and externally funded research program in undergraduate STEM education. It is anticipated that these faculty have a thorough understanding, through research and application, of best practices in the scholarship of teaching and learning, and in assessment. The purpose of hiring a cohort is to enable interaction across disciplines and encourage the establishment of joint ventures. The successful candidates will conduct research, support and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and teach an introductory course in their discipline as well as upper-division or graduate courses in their field of interest. The successful candidates will couple their research and teaching efforts to improve teaching and learning within their own classroom while partnering with other members of the SoTL cohort as well as other STEM instructors. The successful applicants will be those who have demonstrated that they can help advance student achievement, especially for those students from underrepresented groups, who disproportionately struggle with the STEM gateway courses and are historically excluded from science.
Individual Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform discipline-based education research (DBER) in either mathematics, chemistry, biology data analytics, computer science, or statistics.
Broadly disseminate research findings in peer-reviewed publications in discipline-appropriate journals or conference proceedings.
Secure external research funding sufficient to conduct research and support graduate and undergraduate students.
Teach introductory courses in discipline and additional relevant courses based on interests and apply evidence-based teaching and assessment strategies to improve student success.
Employ strategies to improve the success and retention of historically excluded students.
Perform departmental, college and university service as required.
The workload is 50% research, 40% teaching and 10% service. This translates into two courses per semester.
Develop a scholarship agenda that explores and develops evidence-based, high-impact practices in SoTL aimed at improving and assessing pedagogy in the introductory and core STEM curriculum and includes undergraduate researchers.
Foster collaboration with Student Success Lecturers and other interested faculty to create a SoTL community of practice.
Organize and sustain, in collaboration with the office of the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (ATL), a campus-wide SoTL seminar series.
Collaborate with ATL to develop a SoTL Institute.
Engage in ongoing development and assessment of the impact of innovative pedagogical initiatives on student learning and success.
1. PHD in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Statistics, or a closely related field by June 2022.
2. Documented expertise in DBER through practice and scholarship.
3. Demonstrated the potential of developing an externally funded research program.
4. Documented record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
5. Demonstrated the potential of becoming an effective teacher and mentor.
6. Demonstrated ability to promote equity and inclusion, particularly for students historically excluded from science.
