What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee join our Polymer Chemistry Lab! This position requires a successful chemist to work in a highly dynamic and exciting environment conducting materials research and development projects. The chemist will be working as a part of a team of hard-working technologists and highly experienced staff. Although ongoing projects include optimization of adhesive bonding to various substrates, formulation of foams and encapsulants for component development, long term accelerated aging of polymers, formulation of new foams and desiccants, testing and long-term aging of conductive adhesives, special focus for this position would be studies on compatibility of polymers in hydrogen environments as applicable to technologies enabling a clean energy transition under programs sponsored by DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, such as H-Mat and HyBlend.

As part of the effort under HMAT, the candidate may have opportunities to develop and run experiments relating to permeation and diffusion of hydrogen and hydrogen/natural gas mixtures in polymeric seals and O-rings, thermal desorption methods to assess hydrogen content within polymers, examine mechanistic changes due to the effect of cold/ambient temperatures and high pressures in a cyclic hydrogen environment. The program is actively developing new pioneering capabilities for in-situ hydrogen exposure and characterization, for example Raman spectroscopy and micro CT tools.

Dissemination of findings in the form of publications in peer-reviewed journals at National Lab conferences and other external conferences is highly encouraged and supported.

On any given day, the chemist will:

  • Apply the scientific method to formulate hypotheses, design experiments, conduct laboratory activities and analyze data to deliver solutions to Sandia National Laboratories mission areas
  • Design and carry out experiments to elucidate the best formulation/materials, processing conditions and properties for relevant hydrogen applications
  • Look for development of innovative approaches or methods towards achieving sponsor’s/Sandia’s customer’s goals
  • Support and successfully implement multi-disciplinary R&D projects by supplementing their technical training and problem-solving skills to that of others on the project team.
  • Arrange meetings with customer/sponsors for establishing test/product/process requirements towards meeting project needs and monthly updates to them on progress made is expected.
  • Prepare memos and reports that will be delivered to customers/sponsors summarizing the results of R&D work and long-term projects
  • Undertake/aid in the development and possible transfer of solutions, products, principles or technology from the design agency to production agency

Qualifications We Require

  • Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry /Chemistry, Polymer Science and Engineering, or related field
  • Technical knowledge and competencies appropriate to the position, supported by a relevant presentation and publication record
  • Experience in polymer processing and characterization.
  • Ability to acquire a DOE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire

  • Ability to team across multiple fields and backgrounds.
  • Ability to travel (approximately 20% of time).
  • Modeling experience with exposure to machine learning methods is a plus.
  • Knowledge of the use of modern analytical techniques for characterizing polymers (DMTA, GPC/SEC, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, NMR, TGA, DSC, GC-MS, etc.)
  • Knowledge or experience in LabView programming
  • Commitment to constantly improving ES&H and security as well as an understanding of activity-level (hazardous work) and laboratory operations.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, including development/delivery of presentations to technical and non-technical audiences as needed.

About Our Team

The Materials Chemistry Department is a group of Chemists, Material Scientists, and Chemical Engineers who actively supports the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile by providing materials expertise to SNL's non-nuclear components. We use our understanding of chemical properties to design, evaluate and exploit monomers, polymers and functional materials. Our core competencies span foams, composites, adhesives, plastics, surface finishing and electrochemical deposition. We have the facilities for materials characterization, design prototyping and WR processing.
