The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) invites fellowship applications for full-time Research Chemist positions to work in the Chemical and Biological Monitoring Branch (CBMB). This position is with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Health Effects Laboratory Division (HELD), located in Cincinnati, OH.
Position
This is a full-time position being offered as part of the CDC’s Service Fellowship program under Title 42 of the U.S. Code. U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and non-U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. CDC service fellows are considered federal employees with most of the rights and benefits provided to permanent civil service employees. The initial fellowship appointment will be for three to five years with potential for renewal based upon performance and available NIOSH funding. Salary will be based on education and experience. Fellows will be eligible for government health and retirement benefits.
Job Description
The Chemical and Biological Monitoring Branch in the Health Effects Laboratory Division of NIOSH conducts research in analytical measurement sciences by developing new methods, tools, and knowledge for environmental and biological monitoring.
The position provides an opportunity to lead laboratory studies to develop new analytical methods, instrumentation, or sensors for measurement of toxic chemicals and/or biomarkers associated with workplace or industrial settings. Identifying research gaps (in the context of analytical science needs for exposure measurements and biological monitoring), developing grant proposals, designing and conducting laboratory experimental studies, communicating and reporting results to management, presenting at scientific conferences, and writing peer-reviewed journal manuscripts are essential to this position. There will be several opportunities for professional growth and to develop internal and external collaborations.
Duties
The fellow will be responsible for the following:
• Conduct research to better assess personal exposure, and the biological response associated with chemical and physical stressors in the workplace; and
• Provide leadership in the development of new analytical or bioanalytical methods to advance our ability to conduct exposure measurements and contribute to the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods (NMAM) [ https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/nmam/default.html].
Basic Qualifications
Degree: This position requires a degree with a major study in an academic field related to physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
GS-11 equivalent - $68,915.00
Master’s degree with one year or more postgraduate experience equivalent to the next lower grade level related to the work of the position.
GS-12 equivalent - $82,601.00
Master’s degree with one year or more postgraduate experience equivalent to the next lower grade level related to the work of the position.
Ph.D or equivalent, postdoctoral experience not required.
Highly qualified candidates would possess the following:
• Strong laboratory proficiency in using multiple Immunochemical- or aptamer-based technologies such as ELISA, multiplex assays, lateral flow assays, high throughput clinical chemistry analyzers and flow cytometry.
• Working knowledge of molecular biology techniques.
• Experience working with biological matrices using advanced analytical methods including mass spectrometry and separation techniques such as gas or liquid chromatography.
• Experience with a variety of detectors (such as mass spectrometers, FID, ECD, FPD, NPD, UV, fluorescence, etc.).
• Experience in analytical method development and validation, development of direct reading or point of care methods/instrumentation.
• Experience in the application of standard methods or development of new methods in the context of worker exposure measurements, environmental sampling, or biological monitoring.
• Experience in biological specimen and environmental sample collection.
• General biological and analytical chemistry laboratory skills, and working knowledge of various sample preparation techniques for environmental/and biological samples.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently to troubleshoot instrument/method issues, analyze critical data to draw conclusions, and effectively communicate experimental results.
• Superior oral communication and scientific writing skills, as demonstrated by authorship of research proposals, conference presentations, and refereed journal manuscripts.
• Experience in Laboratory Management, developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures, quality assurance and control, training protocols, validation and study reports, reference standard systems, and sample preparation equipment.
• Knowledge of multivariate statistical techniques, uncertainty budgets, and bias and accuracy calculations.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently as well as effectively and collegially within a team setting.
