Position Summary:

The Chemistry Department in the Division of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at Southern Oregon University (SOU) invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month, Assistant Professor in Physical Chemistry position. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading physical chemistry lectures and labs, as well as teaching in our general chemistry sequence, and will also have an opportunity to contribute to computational chemistry, general physics labs and general education courses.

The Chemistry Department values supportive interactions with students and the successful candidate should demonstrate the desire to teach, advise, and sustain a vibrant research program with undergraduates with diverse backgrounds. Scholarly activities may include research in the scholarship of discovery, synthesis, application, or teaching. Our program is well-equipped with a 400 MHz FT-NMR, UV-Vis, ICP-AES, FTIR-ATR, GC, HPLC, five MS systems including two LC-MS, XRF, and supporting equipment. Other responsibilities include department and university service, curriculum development, professional affiliations as appropriate, and other responsibilities as assigned. The successful candidate will ideally have a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry or a closely related field. Postdoctoral experience and/or college level teaching experience is highly desirable.

Southern Oregon University is a public liberal arts institution of approximately 4,000 undergraduate and 500 graduate students. The surrounding area is known for cultural offerings such as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Ashland International Film Festival, and the Britt Music Festival. The Rogue Valley is also renowned for outdoor activities such as hiking, snowboarding, and fishing.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Initial appointment at the rank of assistant professor requires a terminal degree in physical chemistry or closely related field from an accredited institution. May be ABD at hire.

• Applicants should have at least one year of experience teaching in higher education.

• Ability to lead physical chemistry lectures and labs, teach in our general chemistry sequence, potential to teach computational chemistry, deliver general physics labs, and offer general education courses.• Applicants should provide documented evidence of teaching excellence and scholarly activities.

Preferred Qualification:

• Ph.D. in physical chemistry or closely related field from an accredited institution.

• More than one year of teaching in higher education, teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students.

• Demonstrated desire to teach, advise, and pursue active research with undergraduates with diverse learning styles and backgrounds.
