Job Details

The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense (USAMRICD) is the Department of Defense’s lead laboratory for medical chemical defense research. As a subordinate element of the U.S. Army Medical Development and Materiel Command (USAMRDC), the institute conducts research for development of medical countermeasures to treat exposure to various chemical threat agents for protection of soldiers and civilians. Scientific disciplines at USAMRICD include, but are not limited to, chemistry, biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, molecular biology, neuroscience, toxicology, physiology, psychology, and immunology.

What will I be doing?

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will be involved with the development of novel medical countermeasures for chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and will conduct research that will uncover new classes of compounds for exploration as potential countermeasures against chemical and biological warfare agents; determine structure-activity relationships and identify structural features important to specific types of pharmacological activity; design novel synthetic pathways to unknown compounds; and formulate and carry out synthetic procedures leading to compounds which maximize the desired properties.

As an ORISE participant at USAMRICD, you will employ a broad and thorough knowledge of chemistry and various branches of life sciences to ensure the technical soundness of the research programs and will keep current on the latest developments in sciences and synthetic procedures so that new advances can be applied without delay to the solution of problems in later development phases.
