Position Summary:
The laboratory of Dr. Jessica Fortin at Purdue University (Fortin Drug Discovery Lab) has an opening for a Post Doc Research Associate in medicinal chemistry to synthesize small molecules and investigate their anti-fibrillary activity on tau and α-synuclein, relevant target for Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease, respectively. The candidate will be involved in the neurodegenerative drug discovery project using routine organic chemistry, purification techniques, and additional biophysical assays (e.g. DLS, ITC). Description of duties:
* Perform research and document project-specific experiments, e.g. synthesizing/purifying/characterizing small molecules and perform drug candidate screening.
* Prepare lab reagents.
* Lab organization, organize/update chemical inventory from commercial source and in-house library of molecules.
* Data compilation and analyses of biophysical and biological properties of molecules.
* Establish more advanced chemistry reactions for optimization of small molecules and assist in training chemistry lab members on basic chemical reactions.
* Compile and summarize experiment results for reports and publications.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills:
Up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques and knowledge of medicinal chemistry and organic chemistry; word processing, spreadsheet, database and/or desktop publishing software, presentation software, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications:
* PhD in organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry
* Attention to detail and thoroughness in record keeping
* Demonstrated organizational skills
* Experience with organic chemical synthesis of small molecules with techniques of purification
* Experience with NMR spectroscopy
* Experience in drug screening, biophysics and molecular biology are advantageous but not required
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
* Willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and procedures
* Collaboration with other members in the lab is essential.
