Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is strategically investing in and focusing on key research areas in Predictive Phenomics. Within this goal we seek scientists who are focusing their research on the development of innovative function-driven approaches to characterize complex biosystems to make significant impacts on grand challenges of our time. The successful candidate will fill a key leadership role in a Science & Technology Research Program to build capabilities in Predictive Phenomics – which is developing experimental and computational capabilities for functional profiling at molecular resolution of complex biosystems. The candidate will be expected to provide leadership in the development of research strategies, scientific mentorship to research teams, and contribute to establishing new research programs.
PNNL is seeking outstanding senior-level applicants for a Chief Scientist for Predictive Phenomics to conduct interdisciplinary basic science research that encompasses a functional understanding of biosystems. Applicants will be considered with expertise in any of the following areas of cell biology, genetics, microbiome sciences, microbiology, molecular biology, or chemistry. We are especially interested in candidates who are innovating cutting edge approaches to understanding biological systems at the functional molecular scale, such as chemical biology, bioengineering, functional omics, synthetic biology, and related areas.
The position comes with substantial resources and leadership opportunities at PNNL, and the successful candidate will integrate into and lead project teams tackling significant questions in biology. The successful candidate should have a strong track record of collaborative research, scholarly productivity, and demonstrated ability to secure independent, peer-reviewed funding (e.g, NIH, NSF, DoD, or DOE grants). The candidate will be expected to lead research that produces impactful peer-reviewed publications, gains competitive federal grants, and play a key role in national and international leadership in an area related to Predictive Phenomics.
This position is located in Richland, WA.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS/BA with 9 years of experience
- MS/MA with 7 years of experience
- PhD with 5 years of experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, microbiology, or related field, with 15+ years of experience.
- An established Principal Investigator (PI) with a sustained track record of independent research funding from multiple sponsors over several years.
- Demonstrated ability to lead dynamic, multi-disciplinary teams of scientists and manage complex projects.
- An international reputation in their scientific community with a sustained track record of disseminating research through peer-reviewed publications, invited presentations, etc. and contributions to influencing the national research agenda through sponsor, society or
- Demonstrated record of strong leadership qualities, scientific talent, team building and motivation skills, and project management, as well as a proven commitment to the mentoring and development of junior scientific staff.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently as well as in interdisciplinary group settings with internal and external collaborators.
