The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Rutgers the State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick is seeking a Senior Mass Spectrometrist to manage its Mass Spectrometry (MS) Facility (https://chem.rutgers.edu/facilities/facilities-mass-spectrometry.

The facility occupies space in the recently opened Advanced Instrumentation Facility in the Chemistry and Chemical Biology building and is equipped with a SYNAPT G2-SI qTof and Xevo G2-XS Qtof instruments from Waters.   The facility is open to Rutgers faculty members for a range of MS needs including characterization of small molecules and biomolecules, post-translational modifications, biomolecular mixtures, and proteomic samples using cutting-edge MS methods.  
 

The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations and maximizing the effectiveness of the facility.  Specific duties include: 

  • Developing new and contributing to existing scientific projects of departmental faculty members with cutting-edge MS methodology.
  • Guiding users to prepare samples and perform laboratory work, including instrument method development, running analyses on facility instrumentation, interpreting results, and writing reports.
  • Performing quality control and preventative maintenance on facility equipment in collaboration with existing technical support staff who have experience with troubleshooting and performing simple instrument repairs and working with service engineers to diagnose and fix more complex issues.
  • Performing administrative duties such as reviewing and approving monthly billing for equipment usage and special projects, maintaining electronic notebooks.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:  PhD/Master’s degree in mass spectrometry or a related field; minimum of five years (seven years with Master’s degree) of experience with mass spectrometry instrumentation; strong interpersonal and organizational skills; a commitment to exemplary customer service; a research-focused and collaborative spirit to develop and expand the services of the facility.

Previous experience managing or working in a mass spectrometry core facility at a university preferred
