Researcher - Environmental Quality Services/Organics Laboratories

 

The Energy and Environmental Sustainability Laboratories (EESL) invites applications for an immediate opening for a Researcher position to manage the day-to-day operations of the well-established Environmental Quality Services Laboratories that include the Water Quality and Organics Laboratories. The Environmental Quality services laboratories are shared core facilities that are open to support all Penn State faculty, students, and external clients. The laboratories provide organic and inorganic analyses of various matrices including water, soil/sediment, biologic, synthetic and geologic materials and support of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research across hydrology, biology, ecology, biogeochemistry, food and plant science, and materials science.

 

Primary responsibilities include working and collaborating with internal faculty/researchers as well as external academic and industrial clients to identify, research and develop analytical techniques and best analytical approach required to answer research questions.

 

The successful candidate must have extensive experience in developing new techniques, working with, operating, and troubleshooting high resolution mass spectrometers, which includes a UHPLC Orbitrap MS -Q Exactive equipped with ESI, APCI and DART ionization source, a Triple Quadrupole GC-MS/MS equipped with a Pyroprobe, and a single Quadrupole GC/MS. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for overseeing the water quality laboratory instruments and sample preparation, the organics sample preparation laboratory.

 

The successful candidate must possess:

 

• experience in developing sample preparation techniques

• experience working with and training faculty and students on sample preparation, calibration and operation of lab instruments, data acquisition and interpretation

• willingness to work collaboratively in a team environment and demonstrated ability to trouble shoot complex problems.

 

The successful candidate must be organized, detail oriented, possess excellent analytical, communication and writing skills, and have a minimum of a Ph.D. in a relevant field (e.g., chemistry, geology, biogeochemistry, environmental engineering) and must have demonstrated ability as a researcher, and evidence of professional growth and scholarship in his/her discipline.

 

This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with an excellent possibility of renewal.
