The College of Wooster invites applications for an Organic Chemistry Laboratory Instructor, a two-year full-time nine-month position with possibility for renewal, to begin August 2022. Core responsibilities include teaching in Wooster’s two-semester organic chemistry laboratory course sequence, as well as administrative and preparatory tasks associated with delivering the courses to Wooster students.
The College of Wooster is an independent college of the liberal arts and sciences with a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. We enroll a racially, socioeconomically, and culturally diverse student population of approximately 2,000 undergraduate students, of which 6% identify as Latinx; 9%, as Black/African American; 4%, as Asian; 4%, as multiracial; and 61% as white. Fifteen percent (15%) of our students are studying on international visas. Twenty-five percent (25%) are Pell-eligible and 11% are first-generation college students. Applicants should have an M.S. degree in Chemistry or an associated field by the time of appointment and should demonstrate either potential for, or experience with, inclusive teaching practices. The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of 4.5 courses (9 sections) of organic chemistry laboratory per year, in collaboration with organic chemistry faculty members assisting with the design and implementation of the curriculum. A typical teaching schedule involves five sections of Organic Chemistry I Laboratory in the Fall, and four sections of Organic Chemistry II Laboratory in the Spring. In addition to implementing curricular innovations associated with the lab courses, key responsibilities include equipping student lab drawers, preparing supplies and reagents, maintaining and operating relevant instruments, and supervising student laboratory assistants. The candidate may also have the opportunity to contribute to our curriculum by teaching a course for non-science majors or an upper-level elective related to their field of interest.
The Department of Chemistry has a strong emphasis on collaborative and interdisciplinary learning and a thriving culture of mentored undergraduate research. The Department is housed in a recently renovated teaching and research space integrated with the life science facilities. It has a 400 MHz NMR spectrometer, a high-resolution quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and eight full-time faculty members who mentor a total of 15-20 seniors per year, many of whom pursue advanced study and/or careers in chemistry.
