Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Organic Chemistry Laboratory Instructor position. The Organic Chemistry Laboratory Instructor is a full-time, 10-month term position. The Organic Chemistry Laboratory Instructor supports the teaching mission of the Chemistry Department through implementation of hands-on learning in the organic chemistry teaching laboratory. Primary responsibility will be the teaching of laboratories for the first- and second-semester organic chemistry courses (CHEM-221 and CHEM-231) that are offered every semester to a highly diverse group of students. Additional responsibilities may include the teaching of discussion sections, the holding of office hours and assisting in the grading of homework, quizzes, and exams in those courses.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
Teach laboratories:
• Work collaboratively with faculty to coordinate learning experiences, goals, and schedules.
• Teach 3-4 lab sections per semester as well as 2 discussion sections per semester, or the equivalent.
• Implement inclusive pedagogical approaches and work towards an inclusive classroom culture.
• Organize and supervise a diverse set of undergraduate teaching assistants
• Provide evaluation of student laboratory work, including their written and practical work.
• Prepare, test, and assemble laboratory demonstrations for the organic chemistry courses.
Qualifications
Required:
• Master's degree in organic chemistry or a closely related sub-field of chemistry
• 1 to 2 years of experience teaching laboratory science
• Experience with the techniques, equipment and instrumentation of organic chemistry laboratories
• Strong communication, time-management, interpersonal, and organizational skills
• Dedicated excellence in undergraduate teaching
• Ability to research and create written and visual communications.
• Ability to work independently, multi-task, and have attention to detail.
• Ability to work flexible hours in order to accommodate course schedules.
• Sensitivity to issues of confidentiality
Preferred:
• Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry or a closely related sub-field of chemistry
• More than 3 years of experience teaching laboratory science.
