Description

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Swarthmore College invites applications for a full-time tenure track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2023. The successful candidate will have research interests in the field of physical chemistry, broadly defined. The candidate will participate in the physical chemistry lecture and laboratory curricula as well as in the general chemistry curricula. Teaching an upper-level seminar on the topic of faculty interest is also anticipated.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has 8.5 permanent tenure lines, a Lecturer, four lab instructors, and an instrument specialist. The Department graduates between ~15-20 majors in Chemistry and Biochemistry as well as special majors in Chemical Physics and Chemistry Education. Classes for majors are small, students are motivated, and the opportunities for collaboration with colleagues and students are real and abundant. Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field is required.  Postdoctoral experience is highly encouraged.

The successful candidate will have a passion for teaching and mentoring undergraduate students and the potential for innovative and impactful scholarship. The strongest candidates will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to creative teaching and an active research program that speaks to and motivates undergraduates from diverse backgrounds.

Applicants should include a cover letter describing their interest in Swarthmore College, a curriculum vitae, 5-page research statement, 2-page teaching statement and three letters of recommendation.  The research statement should describe the applicant’s program of research (including research interests, recent and current research, and anticipated areas for future work) and its potential to engage undergraduate students.  The teaching statement should describe the applicant’s interests in teaching at an undergraduate institution, previous teaching experience, and approach to teaching and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.
