Job Description:
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), in the College of Engineering at Iowa State University (ISU), invites applications for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor in biomaterials and biomedical application areas. Exceptional candidates with commensurate experience and proven track record will be considered for tenure and advanced rank of Associate and Full Professor.

Candidates can have experience in experimental, computational, or clinical research related to synthesis, structure, properties, and performance of soft/cellular materials and tissues, hard/soft material interfaces, prosthetic implants or device materials, and biomimetic structures.

Successful candidates will be expected to establish, sustain, and grow a world-class externally funded research program that complements or aligns with the department’s areas through independent and collaborative efforts. Additionally, the candidate is expected to establish a record of scholarship at the highest levels, contribute to the teaching missions at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and engage in institutional service and service to the profession. Candidates should have strong communication skills, share our commitment to enhancing excellence through diversity and inclusion, and exhibit the potential for long-term leadership in supporting the mission of the department, college, and university.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  •   Ph.D. or equivalent degree in materials science and engineering or a closely aligned field
  • Associate Professor candidates must also meet the university standards for appointment to the rank including significant experience/accomplishments in the candidate’s area of expertise
  • Full Professor candidates are required to have national distinction, international recognition, and a substantial scholarly record in their area of expertise in addition to the aforementioned requirements

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. and/or M.S. in materials science and engineering, biomedical engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated track record of published research in the field of materials science and engineering.
  • University-level teaching experience, including undergraduate and graduate levels, especially in the topical areas described above.
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in research.
  • industrial collaborations/experience in a related materials area.
  • Demonstrated experience in diversity, equity and inclusion.

About the Materials Science and Engineering Department
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering has 24 faculty members, including members of the National Academy of Engineering, a Nobel Prize winner, and three members of the National Academy of Inventors. The department currently has about 200 undergraduate students and about 55 graduate students. Sponsored research expenditures of the department are over $13M per year. 

The candidate will have opportunities to engage in significant interdisciplinary collaborations on the Iowa State University campus.
