Chemistry Instructional Staff

The Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry & Physics at The University of Tampa invites applications for a Chemistry Instructional Staff position. This full-time, 12-month position reports to the Dean of the College of Natural and Health Science will be directed by the Department Chair and is annually renewable upon performance.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach 15 contact hours total over the academic year, including summer courses.  Primary instructional responsibilities include teaching 100 level courses including general chemistry labs and other courses consistent with the successful applicant’s expertise scheduled at the discretion of the Department Chair.

Staff responsibilities include and may not be limited to the following:

  1. Ordering and budgetary tracking of laboratory supplies and maintaining an inventory for chemistry courses.  The incumbent will coordinate and facilitate equipment and supply purchasing for department courses and for restricted accounts (faculty research, etc.) including:
  • determination of item availability and pricing
  • coordination and tracking of shipping for all ordered items
  • distribution of supplies and equipment to appropriate recipients and verification of order accuracy and end-user satisfaction prior to processing payment of invoices
  • tracking of departmental expenditures and coordination with departmental staff assistant and department chair to maintain departmental budget records

      2.  Manage service contracts for all departmental laboratory equipment requiring one.

      3.  Provide 3 hours of laboratory setup support for physics labs.

      4.  Maintain laboratory, stockroom, and supplies for upper division chemistry labs.

      5.  Work with the University Chemical Hygiene & Biological Safety Officer to coordinate the disposal of hazardous wastes generated by departmental personnel.

      6.  Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.

The successful candidate will have:
A minimum of 18 graduate credit hours in chemistry or a related field or equivalent; a Masters’ degree or above is preferred. Prior teaching experience (preferred). Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work smoothly with a diverse group of faculty and students. Proficiency in handling laboratory equipment and chemicals. Knowledge of basic chemical hygiene and safety requirements. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and knowledge of or the ability to learn quickly The University of Tampa software programs such as Workday. Willingness to embrace new technologies and innovative organizational practices.

The Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry & Physics consists of approximately 33 full-time faculty and academic staff members and more than 250 majors. The Department awards degrees exclusively at the undergraduate level in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Forensic Science, Marine Chemistry, and Physics. Students may pursue degrees certified by the American Chemical Society (ACS), accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), or the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC). About 40 majors graduate from the Department annually.
