CSU STRATA is a private, not for profit corporation, legally separate from Colorado State University aka CSU. Founded in 1941, we support and serve the campuses and affiliates of the CSU System through strategic real estate management, project development services, special project oversight, intellectual property management and technology transfer services, as well as operational management of regional, state, national, and international assets. Prior to August 2022, CSU STRATA was commonly known as the Colorado State University Research Foundation aka CSURF.  The merging of CSU Ventures with CSURF in 2019, resulted in a rebranding effort to align our name and look with the Colorado State University System, and to unite each company’s services into a comprehensive whole which more clearly expresses our charter to service the unique needs of each campus and affiliates of the CSU System.

The Technology Transfer unit of CSU Strata actively supports and promotes the transfer of research and innovations from across the Colorado State University System into the marketplace to benefit society. CSU Strata serves as a resource for CSU faculty, staff and students, and for industry, entrepreneurs, and investors seeking to further research or commercialize a technology that has originated within the CSU System.

Strata is seeking technology transfer professionals, at varying levels of experience, to be a contributing staff member, responsible for portfolio management including identifying, evaluating and licensing inventions from researchers at institutions in the Colorado State University System. Responsibilities include ability to identify technologies with commercial applications, evaluate the commercial potential of inventions, identify potential licensees, prepare nonconfidential technical information for marketing purposes, develop and implement market strategies for each technology, draft and negotiate licensing and other agreements, as well as material transfer collaboration, interinstitutional and nondisclosure agreements.

Sr. Licensing Manager This is the highest level, nonsupervisory position, and may stand in for the Director in their absence. Working independently, this professional approves nonstandard license terms, may be asked to interpret policies, train staff, and provide overall guidance.

Licensing Manager  This midlevel, nonsupervisory professional negotiates and approves license terms within established parameters, works under general guidance with periodic review of work, and may advance to the Senior Manager level when experience and performance requirements are met.

Associate Licensing Manager  This entry level, nonsupervisory professional works under close supervision with frequent review of work and may advance to Manager level when training is complete and experience requirements are met.

QUALIFICATIONS               Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Education            

Required  All Levels  Graduate Degree in Chemistry, Engineering e.g. Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Civil, Materials Science, Physics or related field.

Preferred  Registered Patent Agent, CLP, RTTP certification for manager, senior manager level

Experience

Required  Experience in technology commercialization, licensing, business development or intellectual property                         management.

Associate    0 to 3 years

Manager    3+ years

Senior Manager   7+ years

Required Familiarity with the basic concepts of intellectual property law, particularly patent law.

Required Ability to read and understand technical literature.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES  

Develop Invention Portfolio  Build relationships across the CSU System to raise awareness of CSU STRATA and technology commercialization, to encourage submission of technologies for commercialization. Support inventors’ research and entrepreneurial interests and goals. Introduce internal and local resources to faculty, students, and staff if there is an interest in formation of a startup company. Advise and educate faculty, staff and students regarding protection of intellectual property and technology commercialization matters.

Evaluate Invention Disclosures..  Evaluate invention disclosure and determine patentability and marketability and communicate results with inventors. 

Manage Invention Portfolio. Track invention activities and agreements utilizing databases and document management systems. Work with IP Strategy team, patent attorneys and inventors to coordinate patent protection and filing of patent applications.

Technology Commercialization.  Develop and implement communication and commercialization plans customized to each technology, weighing technology readiness, commercial potential, market size, and initial commercial interest. Manage industry relationships by acting as liaison between CSU System faculty, staff, students and potential licensees, patent and contract attorneys, industrial scientists, senior business development executives, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. Negotiate terms of licenses, options, confidentiality, and other agreements and draft subsequent agreements

Negotiate Commercialization Agreements.  Prepare and exchange term sheets with potential licensees, and work with agreement templates to convert term sheets into draft contracts. Negotiate license and contract terms, with the support of the Director and Vice President, to get to executable agreements.

Support CSU System Agreements.  Coordinate with CSU Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), supervisor and legal counsel to draft appropriate contract language on various research and collaboration agreements to protect IP rights.

Reporting.  Assist in preparation of written reports for Board of Trustees and CSU System administration. Attend meetings as requested by the CEO, Vice President or Director. Participate in developing and maintaining infrastructure to enable successful technology transfer.

Outreach, Marketing and Education.  Generate a nonconfidential summary of the technology in collaboration with staff, to be used for marketing, ensure posting of summaries on various sites and outreach to relevant parties. Work with staff to develop creative marketing and licensing strategies. Represent CSU STRATA and the CSU System at professional meetings and conferences, technology transfer trade conferences, investment and economic development meetings and events, e.g.  AUTM or LES meetings and other national, state and local meetings as appropriate.

General Responsibilities are to Perform other duties as assigned that are necessary to meet CSU STRATA’s technology commercialization objectives.

Salary Range  $70,000 to $120,000;  Position, Title, Salary depend on level of experience

Job type           Full time, Exempt

Hours               Monday through Friday, 800 a.m. to 500 p.m.
