The NYU Tandon School of Engineering (“Tandon”) is seeking a collaborative, dynamic and visionary leader to serve as the next Vice Dean for Research (VDR) and to be a member of Tandon’s tenured faculty. Reporting directly to the Dean, the VDR will join a successful and motivated leadership team and celebrated faculty experts in the areas of data/AI/robotics, cybersecurity, wireless, health, emerging media, urban science and sustainability. Tandon offers a full array of undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering disciplines and is home to internationally acclaimed research centers in visualization & data analytics, cybersecurity, AI, wireless & telecommunications, urban science, and transportation. Formerly Brooklyn Poly and Polytechnic University, Tandon has undergone a singular transformation since merging with NYU in 2014 - including a staggering 47 spot rise in the USNWR rankings. In just the past 5 years, our engineering faculty body has grown by nearly 20%, as research expenditures have increased by 56%, and we have increased our diverse student population by 42%.  


The VDR will serve as the key leader in the dean’s office for research strategy, development and operations. They will 

  • Work collaboratively with faculty, school and university leadership, department chairs, center directors, staff, and external partners in industry to develop, grow and advance Tandon’s research initiatives, including forging new interdepartmental connections within Tandon and building and advancing partnerships with NYU’s School of Medicine, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Center for Data Science, College of Arts & Sciences and others. 

  • Facilitate the development of new research centers and/or initiatives in support of Tandon’s strategic vision, with a special emphasis on identifying and pursuing opportunities for multi-school/multi-institutional center grants to significantly grow and expand our extramural funding base. Develop metrics to measure success.

  • Assess and address the school’s current research infrastructure, policies, processes and practices to ensure that faculty have the support they need to effectively engage in their research activities and to develop policies and practices to support the growth and sustainability of the school’s overall research enterprise. 

  • Engage industrial organizations and corporate partners on various grant/contract opportunities, developing synergies with faculty and generating funding support from these organizations for PhD fellowships and collaborative research projects. 

  • Engage with new non-profits and non-profits that are collaborating with faculty members and help them with funding and space, in support of collaborative research projects.

  • Work with the school’s marketing and communications team to develop a strategy for research communications, including increasing awareness of Tandon’s research excellence among peer institutions. 

  • Oversee Tandon’s Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), which serves as the school’s central office providing full pre- and post-award grants management support to all of Tandon’s research active faculty. Working closely with the Director of OSP and other members of the dean’s senior leadership, the VDR will be responsible for identifying key metrics of success for research growth and development. 

  • Oversee efforts to promote innovation, entrepreneurship and corporate partnerships within the school and among students and faculty at Tandon. 

  • Have broad oversight of Tandon’s new PhD Student Hub and will work with the Director for PhD Student Development, the Manager of the PhD Student Hub and faculty to form and implement programming, policies and practices that serve to support and develop PhD students in their academic growth and success, in addition to ensuring that Tandon is providing best in class service to the PhD student body. 


The VDR will work closely with the Dean and their team to ensure Tandon’s research related campus planning aligns with Tandon’s short, medium and long-term faculty hiring plans. They will be responsible for research related campus planning, research IT, research facility operations and research compliance, and will be heavily involved in Tandon’s ongoing long term capital planning efforts. This will require working extensively and collaboratively with faculty, researchers, department leadership, school & university leadership, external consultants, and other members of Campus Planning and Facilities staff to establish goals and objectives that ensure the highest and best use and operations of Tandon’s current and intended facilities in alignment with the school's mission and University budget and planning standards. 



The successful candidate will have a record of distinguished scholarly achievement, an earned doctorate in an appropriate engineering field and outstanding research leadership qualities, including a strong fundraising track record to elevate the brand and influence of NYU Tandon. The ideal candidate will have an aptitude for administration, ideally with experience leading a center/department, building programs and/or leading faculty research or development initiatives; have the ability to help recruit and retain a broad and distinguished faculty; will bring a thoughtful and inclusive approach to leadership, have a demonstrated record of collaboration and building new relationships, as well as unwavering commitment to diversity in all its forms and have a natural inclination toward experimentation and innovation. Preference will be given to individuals with previous experience leading robust active research programs or who currently have active research programs in academia or industry.
