The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSEN), College of Engineering at Texas A&M University invites applications for two (2) open-rank tenured or tenure-track faculty positions with a 9-month academic appointment and the possibility of an additional summer appointment contingent upon the need and availability of funds, beginning August 16, 2023. 
 
We seek individuals with specific focus on soft materials and who have demonstrated excellence in mechanical and nanostructural polymeric material characterization.
  
The successful applicants will be required to teach; advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; develop an independent, externally funded research program; participate in all aspects of the department’s activities, and serve the profession. Through effective collaboration across the discipline of engineering, the MSEN department has numerous opportunities for the development of laboratories and sponsorship of research activities. MSEN is a new and growing department, with our first undergraduate class graduating in May 2021. MSEN is an integral part of the TAMU College of Engineering, with excellent interaction with faculty in other engineering programs to support large-scale college initiatives, as well as access to graduate students to assist in research activities. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M is jointly operated by the College of Engineering and College of Science. This multidisciplinary Department includes full-time faculty and joint and affiliated faculty members from several disciplines, including aerospace engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, and physics. The new faculty member(s) will be integral contributors to the Department’s strategic research direction and its continued drive toward excellence in academia, research, and service. The Department currently has 19 tenure track/tenured faculty, two professors of practice, 205 graduate students, and 181 undergraduate students. The Department ranks 13th among public undergraduate and 17th among public graduate programs.

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is a new graduate department housing the university’s existing Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Program. The academic administration of the department is under the joint supervision of the deans of engineering and science. The department has about 100 graduate students enrolled, most of whom are pursuing Ph.D.s. There are currently seven full-time faculty in the department, and 42 more faculty members jointly appointed. The target for the department is to increase the number of full-time faculty to more than 17 and establish an undergraduate program in the next five years; and increase to 30 faculty, with 750 undergraduate and graduate students by 2025.
