Job Details

Job Summary: Create value for Kalsec through research, development and applications activities that solve customer problems by creating, developing, and applying new products, processes, and technical knowledge.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Serves as a principal investigator: planning, designing and independently conducting experiments and associated research, development, and applications activities directed toward identified, strategic hops business opportunities.  Leads/directs interdepartmental projects.  Schedules and chairs technical planning and review meetings.  Proactively organizes team results. Routinely serves as a technical resource to the Director of Hop Product Management, enhancing Kalsec®'s technical reputation, while providing customers with advanced technical presentations supportive of Kalsec® business aims.
  2. Records experimental observations in a laboratory notebook kept in a sufficient manner to protect Kalsec®’s intellectual property rights.
  3. Prepares detailed reports, invention disclosure documents, patent applications, etc., that augment Kalsec®’s technical knowledge base.
  4. Serves as a mentor by guiding and training staff, student employees, interns, and/or others performing related work.  Reviews results and the reports of others for distribution or supervisor review.
  5. Is aware of the company’s Q.A. policy and objectives, strictly observing these policy provisions in the fulfillment of this job.
  6. Keeps abreast of the literature (hops and brewing) pertinent to current project as well as to scout new technologies.
  7. Develops contacts with outside researchers that furthers Kalsec®’s hops business objectives and multiplies research efforts.
  8. Maintains a safe and clean work area, complying with corporate safety and environmental policies.
  9. Participates in training programs deemed necessary to either develop job skills and laboratory capabilities or meet company policies and directives.
  10. Participates in sensory programs and projects.

Specific Job Functions

  1. Researches and develops new hops products to innovate both within Kalsec®’s core competencies and beyond.
  2. Utilize advanced relationship skills to establish positive interactions with diverse stakeholders such as customers, vendors, and toll manufacturers in order to advance specific projects in a collaborative fashion.
  3. Serve as an ambassador for the technical merits and utility of Kalsec® hop products, creating and presenting on this subject matter to diverse audiences.
  4. Identifies new technologies and areas of research for new potential product opportunities.
  5. Develop new hop acid, hop oil, or related products through collaboration with other scientists, hop group members, or external collaborators, including customers.
  6. Assist in the development of technical sales and marketing collateral as directed by this function.
  7. Authors reports to disseminate data with Kalsec®.

Education/Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • Ph.D. in a scientific discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience within the field of brewing and brewing science Experience in product development within the beverage industry Project management experience

Desired:

  • Experience with the use of advanced hop products Experience managing small teams Experience with the use and application of various sensory evaluation techniques
