Argonne invites applications for the position of Chemical Sciences and Engineering (CSE) Division Director, one of the five research divisions within the Physical Sciences and Engineering Directorate. Major ongoing research programs in the division include energy storage; solar conversion; hydrogen and fuel cells; catalysis; gas-phase chemical physics; atomic, molecular, and optical physics; heavy-element science; separation science; and geochemistry and interfacial processes. Through these programs, Argonne chemists and engineers are working to revolutionize the generation, storage, and use of energy in the 21st Century. The CSE division maintains multiple state-of-the-art facilities and is deeply engaged with national user facilities, including Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source, Center for Nanoscale Materials, and Leadership Computing Facility. The CSE Director will inspire, manage, and motivate a diverse, world-class team of over 200 scientists, engineers, and support staff. The Director will also lead the development of a scientific vision for the division, execution of the short- and long-term strategic directions of the division, and actively identify and pursue new R&D opportunities and foster collaborations across divisions. The Director has line management responsibility for both R&D and operations within the division, is an integral member of the Laboratory Management team, and works closely with Department of Energy (DOE) program sponsors and other sponsoring entities to review and promote the divisional research and development activities. The Director also ensures divisional activities follow all Federal, State and Laboratory policies and regulations and that work is carried out safely, securely, and efficiently.

Position Requirements

    Ph.D. in a relevant science or engineering field supplemented by no less than fifteen years experience including relevant, demonstrated accomplishments in scientific leadership. Knowledge and experience in technical management functions and practices. Experience in managing safe, efficient operations in a large scientific/ sponsored research organization is required. Experience in managing within a culture that values environment, safety and health policies/orders, work rules and safe practices is preferred. Leadership and management skills in attracting, managing and sustaining a highly competent and diverse interdisciplinary staff and maintaining an open, inclusive, and collegial environment. Knowledge and experience of financial/human resources management and reporting practices is preferred. Experience in acquiring and maintaining relationships with multiple funding sources including with the DOE Basic Energy Sciences (BES) Chemical Sciences,
     Geosciences, and Biosciences program and the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy program are preferred. Skill in oral and written communications skills and the ability to work with high level internal and external contacts.
