Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Description
Washington and Lee University’s (W&L) Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor. Candidates with expertise in physical chemistry, biophysical chemistry, biochemistry, polymer chemistry, materials chemistry, environmental chemistry, or medicinal chemistry will be considered.

As stated in W&L’s Strategic Plan, we believe that a dynamic and inclusive community is an essential element of our success as an institution of higher learning. Continuing support of this environment requires that students and faculty from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives are brought together at W&L to learn, work, and thrive. Therefore, we especially encourage individuals who identify as part of a community that is underrepresented in academia and science to apply.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a 5.5 course load that consists of some combination of teaching a one-term, introductory chemistry course/lab, 200- and 300-level courses/labs in the candidate’s area of expertise, and periodically a course for non-science majors that is part of W&L’s general education curriculum. Start-up funding commensurate with top liberal arts colleges will be provided by W&L to initiate and support an active research program involving undergraduate students. Such a program will be expected of the candidate.

Washington and Lee University is a highly selective, independent, co-educational, liberal arts college of approximately 1820 undergraduate students. We are located in Lexington, VA, about one-hour southwest of Charlottesville, VA, 45-minutes north of Roanoke, VA, and three-hours southwest of Washington, DC. W&L is annually ranked among the top 12 national liberal arts colleges, and the Department has ACS-certified programs in both chemistry and biochemistry.

Qualifications
A Ph.D. is required; postdoctoral experience is strongly recommended.

The university requires employees to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19, with one booster. New employees must provide proof of at least their first shot prior to the first day of employment. Individuals may seek a medical or a religious exemption to the vaccination requirement.

Application Instructions
Applicants should submit the following materials: 1) a cover letter that summarizes current scholarship, identifies plans for future scholarship, and discusses teaching interests and experience; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) graduate and undergraduate transcripts; 4) a one- to two-page statement of teaching philosophy; 5) a two-to-three-page research statement (note that both your teaching and research statements should highlight your experience and plans for working with an increasingly diverse student population); 6) and three confidential letters of recommendation. Letter writers will contribute their materials directly via Interfolio.

To submit applications online, visit: http://apply.interfolio.com/110892

Review of applications will begin September 30, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled.
