The Research Fellow, Chemistry contributes to PTC’s drug discovery efforts by applying medicinal chemistry concepts to effectively design and synthesize small molecules in support of internal lead optimization programs.
The incumbent is responsible for independently planning and executing synthetic organic chemistry protocols to efficiently obtain desired targets for biological assays. The selected candidate is also expected to demonstrate leadership in team settings and contribute to the advancement of lead optimization programs.



Primary duties/responsibilities:


  • Independently plans, initiates, and executes synthetic organic chemistry experiments with high efficiency


  • Interprets and communicates key results as part of a multi-disciplinary team.


  • Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories related to synthetic organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry.


  • Contributes to the strategy and direction of successful drug discovery programs.


  • Manages and directs the efforts of junior chemists and chemists at contract research organizations.


  • Presents findings internally and externally to cross-functional teams.


  • Participates in the development and writing of patent applications and identifies patentable inventions.


  • Helps assure that laboratories abide by all safety and regulatory guidelines.


  • Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook.


  • Performs other tasks as assigned.




  • Ph.D. degree in a scientific discipline preferably in Organic Chemistry with 10-15 years’ relevant Industry experience.


  • Track record of consistent and successful drug discovery accomplishments (e.g., key contributions to optimization efforts, patent inventorship, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications).


  • Deep understanding of synthetic and medicinal and chemistry concepts with high lab productivity.


  • Experience with medicinal chemistry strategies to optimize the characteristics of molecules (e.g. potency, solubility, stability, absorption, etc.) to generate lead series and eventual clinical candidates.


  • Strong communication skills.


  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment.


  • Excellent planning, organization, and time management skills.
