Job Details

Position Summary

The Senior Process Engineer or Lead Process Engineer works across multiple unit operations (distillation, reactions, flash, drying) and understands the polymerization process from new polymer discovery to full scale implementation at manufacturing scale. The Process Engineering Group plays an essential role in long-term process improvements for the Firestone Polymers Lake Charles Plant through discovery and implementation of new technology, solving long-term problems, conceptual design for capital projects, and/or assisting operations personnel and Technical Service Engineers. The Senior or Lead Process Engineer must be self-initiated, driven, collaborative, and able to prioritize efforts to meet performance goals with minimal

supervision. The candidate should be able to generate and accept ideas as well as apply engineering fundamentals/concepts to develop a practical working solution within a cross-functional team using hands-on and practical approach methodology.

  • Generate process control improvements
  • Facilitate and supervise special production runs
  • Collaborate with Product Development Group and scale-up new process/chemistry
  • Solve problems, debottleneck, and optimize plant processes by statistical data analysis of process data and/or interaction with plant and personnel
  • Deliver project presentations to plant and Bridgestone Americas senior management
  • Work with operations/production personnel, maintenance personnel, technicians, vendors, contractors, and/or other engineers in execution of responsibilities
  • Scope projects and assist Project Engineering Group in conceptual design, pre-engineering, and construction of new equipment
  • Supervise start-up of new equipment
  • Create operating procedures


Senior Process Engineer position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in chemical or polymer engineering or a similar degree.  The Lead Process Engineer requires a BS in chemical or polymer engineering or a similar degree with 5 to 10 years experience or an MS or PhD in chemical or polymer engineering with less than 5 years experience.  Experience in production/process engineering, within a chemical refinery or chemical plant is preferred.

The candidate should have:

  • Solid organizational and project management skills
  • Problem-solving skill set and familiarity with process engineering principles and subjects, i.e. unit operations, process simulation, project scope and design, process/distributive controls (DCS and/or PLC), quality control/assurance, and regulatory compliance
  • Knowledge of computers, statistical analysis, simulation programs, or computational tools (PI, MiniTab, ASPEN)
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with management, teammates, and customers
  • Familiarity with hydrocarbon processing, polymer chemistry, and polymer science
  • Experience in measurement and control of processes

Someone who will excel in this position will:

  • Identify and recommend to process engineering group manager innovative projects with strong business cases (cost/benefit analysis)
  • Collaborate (listen, discuss, be objective) with all Firestone Polymer groups to improve the business
  • Thrive in a small plant family atmosphere
  • Convey complex concepts in a simplified, visual manner
