Division and Unit Overview

The Division of Membership is responsible for recruiting, retaining, engaging, recognizing and servicing members around the world. With over 151,000 constituents worldwide, providing an integrated suite of experiences and support that meet current and potential member needs is vital to the Society’s mission and future. The Industry Member Programs unit is the Society’s interactor with global industry providing essential offerings to both individual members and executive leads alike. The Project Manager of Industry Member Communications plays a critical role by focusing on communication to provide value to all ACS members with a particular industrial focus.

 

Position Summary

The Industry Member Programs office provides programmatic and administrative support for industrial leaders, entrepreneurs, and individuals in the chemistry enterprise. This Project Manager position directly supports the operations of the office and facilitates communications and information sharing with (and among) various member, potential member, governance, and staff groups. The position reports to the Assistant Director, Industry Member and Award Programs.

This position enables effective communication by providing content creation and editorial oversight of industry- and entrepreneurship-related content and messaging. This includes associated content development, web resources, entrepreneurial efforts, industry-focused social media presence, industrial events and awards, inter-organization partnerships, and more. This position also supports and interacts with ACS governance committees focused on the industrial member experience.

 

Work design: Works with team, independently, and under general direction from manager. This position will serve as a dedicated resource to centralize key functions in support of ACS industrial members. This position will work closely with other staff in the office to ensure that communications supporting the team’s mission are maintained and updated as necessary.

 

Position Accountabilities

  1. Working with others in the office, and using resources provided, efficiently produce content of interest for industrial ACS members.
  2. Manage intake forms for content solicitation; generate original copy, design, format and publish online original content.
  3. Lead the ACS industry presence on acs.org as requested and serve as a subject matter expert that unifies this content and seeks out proactive collaborations across the society. Work with external partner organizations to highlight and produce content for ACS and joint events such as but not exclusively: Chemical Ventures Conference, ACS Heroes of Chemistry, Pharma Leaders, and CTO Summits.
  4. Maintain and update web page content, social media information, and other collateral to raise awareness of various existing industrial-focused programming.
  5. Interact as requested with leaders and executives of large multinational organizations and display necessary tact, diplomacy, and timeliness in these interactions.
  6. Partner with marketing and communications colleagues to highlight upcoming events, programming, and receptions. Partner with the same groups to assist in recognizing award winners, participants, and the positive global contributions of industrial chemistry.
  7. Manage ownership of the ACS entrepreneurial presence on LinkedIn and other social media. Work with area leads to produce event scripts, visuals, press releases, and briefings as needed.
  8. Draft, review, and edit other member-facing communications as requested.
  9. Work with colleagues across ACS serving as an industrial subject matter expert to represent the office’s viewpoint and provide guidance. Support ACS governance by partnering with volunteer leaders and various governance entities as requested. Some travel may be required (5-10% time). Other duties as assigned.  

 

Education/Experience/Technological Knowledge

Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of related experience. Demonstrated proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking. Copy-editing skills and evidence of such is a requirement. Experience with writing and design of webpages is essential. General communications and marketing experience is helpful. Chemistry or other STEM background is desirable. Previous experience working in industry or a commercial organization a big plus. Knowledge or experience with non-profit organizations and working with volunteers is preferable.

 

This position will be primarily based in the DC office. ACS has currently adopted a hybrid work arrangement of three days per week working in the office and two days per week working remotely. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
