Position: Process Chemist
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
Division of Intramural Research
With nationwide responsibility for improving the health and well-being of all Americans, the Department of Health and Human Services oversees the biomedical research programs of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and those of NIH’s research Institutes. The Division of Intramural Research (DIR) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is seeking an outstanding chemist to support the Chemistry and Synthesis Center (CSC). The CSC provides DIR researchers with targeted imaging probes that help accelerate cell based assays, in vivo imaging studies, and translational research leading to better disease diagnosis. The Center comprises a core synthesis facility dedicated to the preparation of imaging probes, a research component dedicated to the discovery of new imaging approaches and compositions, and early drug discovery compounds to collaborating scientists. The existing faculty is an outstanding group of internationally recognized biomedical researchers covering a wide range of basic and clinical research topics (please see http://dir.nhlbi.nih.gov/) complemented by the other research institutes within the DIR (please see http://www.nih.gov/science/#campus).
The NHLBI is looking for an experienced synthetic organic chemist to work within the Chemistry and Synthesis Center (CSC). Candidates must have an MS/MA with at least 5 years of industrial experience, or PhD with post-doctoral research in organic synthesis or medicinal chemistry. The ideal candidate will have expertise in process chemistry and reaction optimization (up to 100g scale). Experience with continuous flow based reaction systems or supercritical CO2 equipment would be useful. Knowledge of modern synthetic techniques and expertise in common analytical methods are expected.
The chemist will scale-up synthesis of intermediates or final compounds. The small molecules are for diagnostic imaging applications, or early drug discovery efforts. Adapting known reaction sequences to continuous flow based operations is also possible. The ability to propose engineering solutions to automated compound preparation using air and water sensitive reagents is helpful. The work requires the ability to devise synthetic approaches to target molecules and propose alternative synthetic routes. The successful candidate has good communication skills and is able to work in a collaborative environment, within a service group.
Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments. Candidates may be U.S. citizens or non-citizens who have, or are eligible to obtain, a valid employment authorization visa.
Applications from women, minorities and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged. Applicants should send their current curriculum vitae with complete bibliography emailed to:
Dr. Rolf Swenson, CSC Center Director, NHLBI
