The Department of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Mary Washington, a state supported, small liberal arts and sciences university located 40 miles south of Washington DC, in Fredericksburg, VA, is seeking applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Analytical Chemistry to begin August 16, 2023.

 

Approved by the  American Chemical Society (ACS), the Chemistry Program at UMW offers Bachelor of Science degrees in both Chemistry and Biochemistry, with the option to pursue ACS certified degrees. Our program is based upon a modern curriculum and is supported by well-equipped laboratories that supplement and extend classroom instruction.

 

We are located in the recently renovated and expanded Jepson Science Center, with 115,000 square feet of teaching and research laboratory space. We have excellent instrumentation including a 400 MHz NMR, ICP-AES, DSC, GC-MS, FT-IR, HPLC, GC, UV-VIS, fluorimetry, Vernier systems, SEM, TEM, AFM-STM. We maintain site licenses for MestreNova, ChemDraw and Scifinder Scholar.

 

Our close-knit team of nine faculty specializes in working with eager undergraduate students in small classes and one-on-one mentoring settings. Passionate teachers are a hallmark of UMW. Successful applicants will demonstrate an enthusiasm for teaching at the undergraduate level, the ability to teach a variety of topics, an interest in involving undergraduates in research, and dedication to effective teaching and high-impact learning in an inclusive environment that embraces diverse talents and backgrounds.

Responsibilities

 

The successful candidate will be able to teach in a student-centered small lecture and laboratory setting. The teaching load is 12 credits per semester and will include a one semester analytical chemistry course (with lab), instrumental analysis course (with laboratory), general chemistry (with lab) and other courses based on the candidate’s expertise and interests.

 

  • Teach analytical chemistry and instrumental analysis Teach general chemistry Teach across the curriculum Establish an active scholarly research program involving undergraduate students Assist department in maintenance, training, and procurement of instrumentation (ex. HPLC, GC-MS)

 

 

Required qualifications

 

  • PhD in Chemistry (or closely related field, with at least 18 graduate credit hours in chemistry) ABD candidates will be considered. PhD must be awarded by August 16, 2023

Ability to teach Analytical Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, and General Chemistry  

 

Preferred qualifications

 

  • Experience maintaining instrumentation (See above. The program is particularly interested in expanding our LC and/or LC-MS resources) Teaching experience Research with undergraduates Directed undergrads Published/presented with undergrads
